Now, also, in the War Within series, it was revealed that Megatron discovered an ancient chamber within Cybertron that 'revealed' the TF's hidden past & 'intended' purpose, and in that room was statues of Dai Atlus & Deathsaurus (I believe) holding the first "Golden Disk" between them.  This would lead to the believe that at some point in the past those two led both factions as well.

 

Now, in the Marvelverse, you've also got the Liege Maximo, who supposedly 'spawned' Megatron, which would place him before Megs.

 

in Cybertron, for the Autobots, you've got Vector Prime, who has claimed he was a leader and is also supposedly one of the original 12 in the TF multiverse, along with Alpha Prime & The Fallen.  And the Fallen can basically be construed as the first Decepticon as well.

 

Other leaders could be construed as the Quintessons, as they had enslaved and manufactured the Transformers as well, and as a technicality were leaders of both factions.  And they very well could have manufactured prior leaders of both factions as well.

 

And as sub-commanders who've led their own factions, you've got Ultra Magnus & Fortress Maximus, as well as Victory Saber for the Autobots, along with some possible others that may have carried the Matrix & were not 'chosen' such as UM, and Shockwave, Scorponok, Jhiaxus, Thunderwing, & Overlord/"Gigatron" for the Decepticons, with varying instances of Starscream, Bludgeon, and possibly Scourge & Cyclonus leading at points.  All this of course excluding the RID & A/E/C universes.

 

Disclaimer: All this of course is excluding Japanese continuity outside of what has been brought over by Dreamwave (ie: Dai Atlus/Deathsaurus) & Hasbro (HoC Gigatron), etc.

Right, which would support that he was keeper of the Matrix inbetween the times of Sentinel and Optimus. Also, Alpha was kind of the leader of the ragtag group of losers the Autobots had become before war with the Decepticons forced them to toughen up.

 

However, he clearly was not a prime, just a holder of the Matrix until a new leader could be found, which he ended up having to build.

Who were the leaders of the Autobots and Decepticons before Megs and OP? Who did Megatron have to kill to rise to the top? I like imagining him plotting and scheming behind the scenes like some Sith Lord, counting the seconds until he can betray his master. Who passed the reins of leadership to Prime? Alpha Trion doesn't seem the "leader" type to me.

ahem what about in transformers the movie? during starscreams coronation you see all those decepticon leaders in the form of large gold statues....i'd assume THEY werer the previous leaders before Megatron.
