ahem what about in transformers the movie? during starscreams coronation you see all those decepticon leaders in the form of large gold statues....i'd assume THEY werer the previous leaders before Megatron.

Like said before, it depends on what continuity you like to follow. For the autobots it's a bunch of nameless bots who have held the matrix in teh cartoon, to a small group of names (but unseen) bots in the marvel/DW comics.

 

As for the deceps: in all the comics there was only Megatron. In the cartoon however there could be more: I think there are two eps that indicate that Megatron was the first Decepticon leader, while "Five Faces..." indicated that Megatron wasn't created until the war had already raged for a long time, meaning others lead before him.

A) Cryotek being RID Meg's master?

 

B) Starscream and Shockwave, as leaders of Tarn and Vos, being Autobots before things got ugly?

 

Just a couple comments I heard in this thread that piqued my interest...

B: Not so much Autobots as they were just Transformers, Cybertronians, considering that in the War Within that Megatron secretly made the decepticons in his arena, Cybertronians were pitted against eachother in that illegal arena and the best from that arena became Decepticons, Starscream and Shockwave were part of those Cybertronians. If they were leaders before I do not know.
