Alternator 2005 Camaro SS

Recommended Posts

I took a 1/25 scale diecast Camaro, and a extra Alt Smokescreen and attempted to make it a transformer.  Its not complete yet, and might not be able to get it to work %100, its damn close for now.  After working on it most of Saturday sitting by the phone waiting for a call, I can't work on it any more.  But it looks decent in robot mode.  (yea not gonna LIE and say it Transforms, when it's not lining up %100, there are some gaps in the frame which I need to figure out how to correct.  Maybe mount  the doors back some more...)

Its not staying these colors either.  My Camaro is white with black trim, and that's what the target look will be.

Ok, first thing to do is take the doner vehicles apart.  Gota be VERY careful what gets cut off, don't know if your gonna need it later.  Almost chopped off the wrong thing a couple times.

The door hinge section for the diecast car when altered made an exellent movable hinge system to connect the body to the chassie.  Its hard to see but the gray section that held something on I made 2 slots so the left over door arms could sit and move a little for car body adjustment, works pretty well.

The doors I figured out where to drill holes for 2 pegs that once held the door pannel on the diecast skin, and mounted it direct to the left overs of the original TF door.  Had to carve the top and part of the front to make it work, still needs adjustments, they don't open far enough and might be good if they were farther back (to close the gap with the rear, if I can get the front hinges to work right and let the car body come back)

Had to carve away the excess diecast frame parts and engine block plate.  Removed the windshield in pieces, and eventually decided to glue the whole roof back into one piece to make it easier to mount and use as a shield.

I cut the rear of the car in 1/2 down the middle.  Decided to do away with the feet and just make it one piece.  Not a huge fan of that split feet action. Removed the spoiler and cut that in 1/2 with a razor, used a dremmel on the diecast.

Through trial and error, carved away the subaru skin, removed the trunk, lights and chopped it up till it would let the camaro body fit around the wheel well, and even in the back.  Left a little of the ground effects sticking out the back, might just make that part of the door.  The midsection of Smokescreen is the same as it was for now.  Gota encorporate the ground effects to look like a Camaro's, and not the boxy stuff.

Again, rear does not line up %100 with the rest of the car yet.  Need to work on the door mounting and the hinges letting the car body move back.

The hood.  Actually the hood is pretty easy, its the little head flap or how to even mount it that's the hard part.  It might be an even better idea to have the Grimlock style head mount, can't do it with this robot so gota cut part of the hood so it works like Smoker.

Take the old hood, and lock it in place, cutting away part of the edges.  Took some hot glue just to tack it, and dropped the stripped down diecast hood on top, fitting it into place.  Removing the complete hood to shave off extra parts and more securely attach the hoods together.  Have not done this yet because I have to do the same thing with the little hood hatch, figure out how much to cut, attach the section to the other hatch, and then do some body work to fill in the gap.  Dremmel makes BIG cuts.

So for now, I have the head mounted with a drop of hot glue to the hood.

Arms...huge problem #1.  Will have to come up with something a bit more drastic.  I carved down the sholder of Smoke down so it fits in a nice groove inside the wheel well, and thought it might work.  Its kinda too low as you can see, so the arms hang low as do the wheels in car mode.  It can still work, just have more carving to do.

Final shots for the day.  Mock up with the arms glued on (higher spot)

And attached (functional) just a bit too low.

Head will need a re-sculpt of course, and the paint (though it kinda looks cool) has gota be changed eventually.

That's quite impressive work, especially considering you're using diecast metal. Parts seem to be lining up pretty well so far.

I am reminded that I have two Alt Viper repaints I plan on doing eventually, and should look into finding Viper kits so I can give them different from Sideswipe & Sunstreaker by swapping in body parts of older/varying deisgns and different roof parts.

Looks pretty cool!  :thumb

I did the same thing with my BT Nemesis Prime... taking an existing robot 'skeleton' (Grimlock) and switching the car body. (2005 Ford GT)

It isn't as easy as some would think... the cars are RARELY the exact same size - wheelbase, length, width... etc, and the transformations are difficult to reproduce.

Looks great though - I can't wait to see the finished work!  :clap

Looks GREAT!

Impressive work with die-cast ... I haven't had the huevos to give die-cast a shot, but ...

... there is no such thing as a 2005 Camaro ... or 04 ... or 03.

Mmm, just beat me to it. GM dropped the Camaro and Firebird due to being beaten senseless by 4 to 1 sales of the Mustang.

Nonetheless, that thing is freaking beautiful!
