BT Rodimus Prime

Recommended Posts

Pretty damn nice, I dont like the colour scheme of reds and oranges that Rodimus is stuck with now nor with the flaming hood, I appreciate the link to the past but the 80s are over ;)

(note I mean i regards to Rodimus in terms of hasbro not you, I feel it time to have the character carve out a more modern image)

I think i prefer RodimusVTS' approach to kitbashing... make a fig, then stick with it for a few months tinkering and imporving until the finished product is actually breathtaking.

Your fig is 1 brazillion (lovers to Pres Bush) x's better today than when you started and quite frankly, alot more "finished" than half the KBs on here.

Thanks Hotrod. Sorry I`m late in getting this up guys just a preliminary sketch I`ve got another idea for him using more of a Firebolt transformation. I did sketch another way for him to transform but it was kind of sick looking.

Well GZ I do have two more just like him, and I just finished building his new torso. I think it turned out pretty well.

I`m kind of surprised at how long it took me to just rebuild his torso. I started working on him this morning around 7 and just finished building it about 8 or 9 this evening.

Only problem with him now though is I glued his head stationary by accident while building the attachment to hold the handle in place. I`ll try some alcohol on it later to see if it works. That and sculpting his helmet on then paint him and he`ll be ready which will put me one step closer to finishing my BT Rodimus Prime. I`ll try and finish up all of the work on them thursday or friday when I start my next 5 days off from work.

Still need to resculpt, and repaint Lil RVTS but this should give you an idea of the two of them together.

Hey good work VTS!  Could you talk a little about your process in actually creating the gun mod to the figure (did you use styrene or something else, etc)?  Also, did you totally abandon the Firebolt idea in using him with Rodimus or are you going to do something else with him?

Also, just a constructive critisim, I really like Rodimus withOUT the yellow spoiler/fin piece.  Although I know it's sort of sigature of Hot Rod/Rodimus, the beauty of the Alternators line is the roots are in G1 (and other lines), but it makes no pretense to actually copy every aspect of a given character. Glad you took the spinners off of the rims; I don't think Rodimus is ghetto :P

Anyways, still looking good!

looks good, but why not just alter a minicon or microman?

Well Superquad I did abandon using the rebuilt Firebolt that I repainted into the first Rodimus VTS figure for two reasons. First he was much too short to be correctly scaled with the Alts. The second reason is that my wife was putting cloths away the other day and while doing so she knocked over my Rodimus Prime who was holding the little guy in gun mode and the little guy disappeared that was about 2 weeks ago and I still haven`t been able to find him.

Now the process of building him into a Target Master was two fold. First I took measurments to ensure that the new torso design was the right size. Then I designed the new torso inside and out (I`d post those sketches but I used them for a template for when I cut the plastic). Using the templates I started on the lower torso first which is 4 pieces of flat styrene and two pieces of angle styrene. Then I made a piece that clicked onto his joint pieces inside of his torso and built the gun barrel parts from there. After finishing that I cut out the side pieces that the lower torso slides up into and made the pieces to hold the head in place. Next I made the chest plate and built the shoulder joints off of that. The really tough part was putting the handle into place. What I did for that was I made two pieces to go on either side of the handle and cut 6 small slivers of styrene for each side and using a pair of tweezers I carefully glue them in stacks of three top and three on the bottom of each "shoulder blade" then I placed the handle in the little hinge joint area and made two more little squares and glued them into place. Them I tryed transforming him and found that some more modifications were necissary to make him work right. I had originally meant to have him have a rectangle chest plate but after I tryed to transform him I found that it stopped the transformation short and the barrels, and the handle didn`t come to enough of a right angle. So that`s why he has the little space in his chest plate. I`ll make up a new sketch of it and post it this weekend with the proper measurments so anyone who wants to make their own new Target Masters from Dino Riders, Halo, or M.A.S.K. figures can if they have the patience for it. Remember it did take me from 7am Saturday through 9pm Saturday. When I make up the new sketches I`ll make sure to include the correct measurments so you guys can get it right the first time rather than having to experiment like I did. In case you`re all wondering how I made the joints I just simply drilled the holes in the strene then cut the pieces out around the holes. then I just cut a path to the hole so that the limbs could click into place.

As for the question from Shajaki. The reason I didn`t use a minicon or a microman is because minicons are too small and the micromen are too big. Unless you mean the old Diaclone driver micromen then it`s because they are too small. Believe me I did my research before settling on which figures to use. I chose the Dino Riders for two reasons first they`re pretty cheap I think mine were $10 plus shipping, and the second reason is because their outfits are more futuristic. Of course that second reason doesn`t really matter anymore with this one but it might on one or two of the others. I have 3 young adult men DR figures incluing my TM RVTS, one Hammerhead shark looking alien, a kid, and an old guy. I`m thinking one of the young guys will become Spike, while the other might become HiQ, the kid will be Daniel. Just not sure who to make the old guy into. I was thinking Dr Archeville but this guy has hair and a goattie. As for the Hammerhead guy I think he might just be for spair parts or something I don`t know.

It`s a little long but I hope it answers your questions.
