Re-issue Dinobot Giftset

Recommended Posts

:wtf Am I the only one who remembers that some of these guys were made into G2 characters?? And further more others were "re-established" as Beast Wars characters? Doesn't that stand for something in the "re-issued" area? :tfhuh Not like I'm trying to say that the orginals would be bad in their first release colors but I'm just stating the obvious that the "re-issue" idea WAS done.

And yes, Hellion42, I'd buy a couple of Slag's and Snarl's at $30 to offset the "price gouge" made due to productivity... they were cool looking figures to me! :thumb

Actually that is the major reason...for some odd reason the Japanese weren't big on the Dinosaur Robo/Dinobot toys

That and Swoop's mold "broke"

The Japanese, who we have seen countless times fleeing in shear terror from Godzilla, don't like Dinosaur Robots?

*scratches head in utter bewilderment*

Also, look at Zyranger (Jap MMPR Season 1) and Abaranger (Jap Dino Thunder)...and they say that they don't like Dinosaur robots.  Also, they released Dinoshout and Terrashaver in GF.  Those are dinosaur robots, aren't they.

Hey, if they weren't popular in Japan, they weren't popular. Kind of a moot point anyway.

Vynce got what I was trying to say. I look at someone like Omega Prime as a "someday classic" character b/c he's just so unique & awesome. I'm sure there are some from BW as well that could be considered "classics". Sadly, the only figure from Armada that I even like is Supercon (bendy) Prime. As for Energon... lots of okay-to-good characters, no real standouts. Cybertron is an improvement IMO but I'm still not being wowed by anything.

I guess the best chances of classic figs coming from currently available TFs are in the BT/Alt line.

REASONS WHY THERE IS NOT ANY DINOBOT REISSUES:

During the 80's Hasbro destroyed many of the original molds to prevent KOs. For G2 Hasbro had to recast Optimus Prime, Jazz, Inferno, and the Seekers. There were three of the Dinobots recast, so three of the molds are available: Grimlock, Slag, and Snarl.

The Dinobot characters were not popular in Japan. Takara was the leading force behind the reissues and is now the only. So expect more Season 3 characters instead.

If you must have some Dinobots just buy the proper colored G2 version off eBay.

I think G1 had something that you can not recreate. I also believe it was more popular with the youth of the 80’s than today’s Transformers are.

I think what made G1 exciting (at least, from what I remember) was the novelty of it. Transforming robots that could "think and feel" was a new concept in the US at the time (come to think of it, it may have been new to Japan as well, given their bias towards non-sentient robots). It was exciting and there was a lot of buzz surrounding it... Plus, the toys were darn cool.

So clearly that's not recreatable today. But of course the culture is different today as well. Back in the Reagan-era 80's, the basic premise of good versus evil really resonated with kids. (Which is one reason why I think the 90's-produced Beast Wars/Machines are much less "black and white" -- they too reflect their time.) And "Transformers" happened to show up in the post-Star Wars void, between the Atari and Nintendo ages, through a stroke of luck. It was primed (no pun intended) to succeed.

Today it would have to be something different. In the 70's, it was Star Wars; in the 90's, it was Pokémon (like it or not); it can't be "transforming robots" again. It's been done.

Excellent analysis and yes I think you are right.

The only exception was Power Rangers. They blatantly ripped off Voltron (not to mention a slew of other Mech combiners) but did much better in the grand scheme of things than all of its predecessors. Why I could not tell you. Voltron PWNS Power Rangers.

See, that right there is why I think it's totally feasible to reissue at least some of them - namely, those released in G2.  Those molds are only 10-12 years old now, and I'm guessing by that time they started preserving the molds since they saw the potential for re-use down the line (being that G2 was primarily re-releases anyway.)

As for the assertion that no one would pay the reissue price tag for these, I disagree.  Look at eBay - they still command a very high price, and many MISB reissues are now commanding a higher price than a decent-condition original (i.e. Megatron, Soundwave, and the Insecticons.)  I believe this would also be the case for Grimlock, and Slag and Snarl stand a good chance of this being the case as well.  (I personally only owned Slag as a kid, so he would be of more value to me than Grimlock or Snarl.  Many collectors can probably relate to this.)

Power Rangers has been around in Japan since the mid-70's... FWIW

not that it didn't suck then too

regardless of how much it costs to make/re-make a mold, I guarantee that the profit from the dinobots specifically would bring in tons more money than it would take to remold them, especially if they come in a gift set

It wouldn't, only Western collectors care about them, without the Japanese market Takara/Tomy can not make up the costs of recasting the missing Dinobots and if needed fix the G2 molds.

You underestimate the greed of the American People, Americans will riot to the toy store to buy doubles of these. They alone can make up the cost. :mwahaha

I dunno... I'm just goofin, you're probably right

you don't have to crush a man's dreams  :epic  :(
