The original G1 sound is the best.  It is a sound that is tied to memory and should do well for even the non-TransFans who do remember the show from childhood.

Wow, that'll be a HUGE demographic

Why not?  It's the best transformation sound.  Do we really need to hear all of the parts of a TF as they transform?  The G1 transformaton sound is direct and it tells you what is happening.  It's also to the benefit of the filmmakers, since all they would have to do is add that sound over any transformation sequence.

I'm sure that you are partial to the Armada/Energon/Cybertron style, but transformation does not need to be a special event.  Both G1 and Beast Wars treated transformation as a natural occurance for the Transformers.

I'm partial to anything that sounds like a robot transforming. Generic transformation sounds are cheap and easy and would give any decent sound designer fits.

Recreating the original sound ought to be challenge enough for a sound designer.

What does a robot transforming sound like?  Should it be a series of sounds of metal sliding across metal and loud clanking?  Anything like that would imply that the Transformers are some sort of human constructed robots.  It won't make them any different That is the beauty of the G1 sound. It suggests transformation but is different enough to make it belong to the Transformers.

Look at what they did in the first Robocop movie, or should I say listen?  Robocop's walk was deliberately made quiet.  It's there for us to hear, but it is not distracting.  It doesn't shout to us, "Hey, everyone, listen to the loud footsteps of Robocop!"

So in space, they don't use hydraulics and stuff? :tfhuh All I'm saying is that the G1 transforming sound was a cartoon sound effect. This is not a low-budget cartoon and it's not the 80's and this is not a show aimed for little kids who don't know any better. People might think it sounds cool -- or they might just be so tied to G1 that they can't imagine anything different. (I suspect the latter is true.) It's time to move on.

I vote for all-new transforming sounds that are befitting of the robots in question.  Jets transforming?  Make light, swooshy sounds.  Heavy big badass trucks transforming?  Clunky, heavy, almost laboured sounds.  That would be cool.

However, slip the G1 transformation in somewhere in the movie as a little Easter egg - perhaps the sounds of a bit part generic TF that's about to get smooshed for example.  I think there will be a lot of Easter eggs that will appease the TF fans.
