Are you guys just as pissed as me?

hasbro is just cutting corners so they can get a bigger return profit. they figure that since the kids they aim tf's at are too young to know any better then they can get away with this.

and they're right

Yeah, but the kids are more likely to not understand why the toy doesn't look like the picture on the box.

I'm an Alternators only collector, but I thought that I would buy Vector Prime. I decided not to after seeing the stark contrast between the photos on the box and actual toy.  The difference is just too great for me to buy the toy.

Although I am quite pissed about this, I don't really think it's that big a deal. Hasbro decided that they would be able to maximize their profits this way, so be it. They are probably right too. As it is, I am not going to buy it at retail price. Then again, I rarely buy megas and ultras at retail price anyway. :)

I would not be so pissed if Takara's Optimus was didn't include "extra" paint apps.  Why I am really pissed is that Hasbro decided to save 2 cents on their version.  So why is hasbro screwing us if takara isnt???

So you can Starscream on short smokestacks but I can't Starscream on missing paint?  FYI although the 20th annv. Prime had short smokes, he had extra battle damage paint and the MP Prime had no extra paint but higher stacks.  In that case, hasbro took away something but gave something back.

And another thing, if no one cared, then why did some ppl buy the GF Optimus instead of Cybertron?

Kids, or rather, Their targetted demographic won't care. In all honesty, I didn't give two sh1ts what was on the box compared what what was *IN* the box back in '84 and I never really noticed differences until Action Masters were tapering off. Being an adult collector I /do/ notice these things, but I find myself not really caring as long as the overall figure is still intact. Show accuracy be damned.

Yeah, I think we're all missing the point here. We talk about "collectors" and "fans" and "customers" as if they were the same group.

They aren't.

absolutely

I assume you meant VP rather than OP?

My guess is that Japanese retail market is quite different from here. They have a lot more young adult collectors and they also have more choices. So Takara didn't have a choice whereas Hasbro did. On the other hand, things like RM and BW return only have enough market in Japan probably.

As did I.

Heck, I remember all those G1 guys doing those crazy poses in their box art, and then you open the toys up and you're like "oh he can.... move his arms." :tflaugh

Hasbro is selling product, not art. They are manufacturers, not crasftmen. It's important to bear that distinction in mind.

Nah dude, you can Starscream about missing paint all you want, just like I can Starscream about "G1 purists" and whatnot. Bottom line for me is...it's paint. Y'know, they sell it at hobby shops. I just can't wrap my brain around the fact that it's...it's paint.

But that doesn't mean I'm going to pick on you for your anger about the missing apps. Hell, I colored in the back of Alt-Wheeljack's head, I plan to color in the silver on Ransack's key and the red on E-Kicker. But I'm just not conviced that cybertron Optimus missing some yellow is a big deal, nor am I convinced that Vector Prime is less of a toy because he doesn't have as much paint on him.

Sorry if I came off a little strong in my first post, though.

First, you need to simmer down. When all's said and done, these are still toys regardless of whether or not we're collectors.

Second, his point was that as long as the physical toy itself, or more precisely, the MOLD is not changed then many of us don't see as big a problem. I don't know about you, but I *like* my money and I don't like to waste it unecessarily. I feel that spending twice or more of a product's domestic retail value is a grossly negligent waste in order to get a handful of paint apps you wouldn't have noticed otherwise. Paint is paint, you can paint things easier than you can craft new body parts to your liking.

While there are people who choose to import, there are at least ten for every one of them who opt otherwise. You're kidding yourself if you think that "some ppl" buying Galaxy Convoy makes Cybertron Optimus Prime a blight on the fandom that'll cause him not to sell.
