It would sound stupid to call a group of robots that all turn into, for the most part, warm blooded animals, Autobots. Plain and simple. That's why they changed their name. Then for the most part, the bad guys turned in to predatorial creatures so why not go by a Decepticon name of vicious animal bots, Predacons. Just to get into the story part of this discussion is any one paying attention to the fact that when the transformers landed on prehistoric earth they immediately went searching for local creatures and not the best disguise? That would lead me to believe they had no intentions on being anything other than animals. Then there's the Fact that the Tripredacus counsel were a Lion, a Bat and some alien looking life form but a life form none the less.

 

I have a Question. Let's say the Maxies and Preds landed on a planet with no organic creatures, what would they turn into? Part of me says they'd get no form. I say this because of that one episode where the stasis pod is scanning for DNA(Hello DNA! Cant find that in vehicles. Most be searching for it for a reason.) the pod finds no DNA and then it halts the scanning process.

Lets look at BW: The Agenda. Ravage says "in the name of the predacons and the Pax Cybertronian alliance". I think it would have been redundant had the alliance only consisted of maximals and predacons. So maybe autobots were around. Decepticons weren't, unless they were turned to predacons like Ravage.

Who are Predacons. About the Autobots, from the Wreckers Comics we know that Rodimus Major, Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Trailbreaker, Devcon, Roulette, Glyph, Tap-Out, and Rook were around in there Autobot Bodies and actave during the Beast Era. Likewise at least the Decepticons Cyclonis and Shadowstriker Survieved the Great War. Optimus Prime, Grimlock, and Soundwave retiered to a mystical region of Cybertron known as Jw'an

The (American) Beast Wars series makes very clear that more groups exist on Cybertron, besides the obvious Maximals and Predacons (group names not chosen because they happened to crashland on Earth and took organic alt modes).

 

VM-01 already mentioned the Agenda and Ravage's statement regarding the Pax Cybertronian. Just prior to that, we hear Optimus Primal explain that after the great war several Decepticons were granted amnesty and that one was rumored to have been rebuild as a Predacon :=> ergo: there are still some Deceps around.

 

Also, in one of the BW eps (I think it's the one where Megatron gains possession of that Vok space ship which he reshapes as his head, but I'm not sure), Megatron clearly states that he wants to return to Cybertron and conquer the Maximals and the Autobots. Again, ergo: there are still Autobots around.

 

So Cybertron is at least populated by (a few) Decepticons and Autobots (X-bob already referred to the Wreckers comics where we saw several in action, although some in new bodies and all had undergone the Maximal upgrade program), and of course Maximals and Predacons.

 

These latter two groups are descended from the first two. How? we don't know. It is obvious, however, that both Maximals and Predacon had the ability to adopt organic altmodes, but hadn't done so on Cybertron (wasn't Primal some kind of monster truck?). It also makes no sense: why have an organic altmode on a completely metallic planet? I think it is an adaption/evolution to cope with the discovery that many planets have organic life, something they didn't know before the crashlanding of the Ark on Earth (in Marvel US #1 it is clearly stated that the Ark didn't recognize organic life and that the both the Autobots and Decepticons were startled when they realized the mistake the Ark had made).

I never read the Marvel books. Did Teletran-1 one think that vehicles were a form of life? So what would have happened if it did recognize humans would the G1 transformers have disguised themselves as Humans?

Mainly because of the upgrade. In Beast Machines Primal refers to it as "The time of the Great Upgrade" so it stands to reason that this was a shift of monumental proportions on Cybertron. Also, it should be worth noting, that nowhere in Beast Machines or Beast Wars is there any reference to the length of time involved in the Beast Wars, and the time difference between the two series. Most of fandom just genrally assumes that it took place over the three years that the show was on TV.

 

Due to the transwarp technology, Beast Machines could have taken place any number of years before or after Beast Wars. Also, Megatron got kicked out of the timestream, and all that we know was that he unleashed the virus shortly before the Maximals returned. He could have been on Cybertron for centuries, slowly directing the course of their evolution to suit his ultimate goals. Nobody knew he was there, so who'd stop him? Thus Nightscream's claim of all transformers having built in scanners might reflect an alternate, divergent reality that Megatron had a hand in to prepare for his coming onslaught and domination.

 

That and the fact Hasbro wanted more animal sounding names to go with the new animal transformers. Maximal reflecting most of the good guys turned into Mammals or Birds, and Predacon seeing that most of the bad guys turned into predators and insects and such  :tftongue

personnally i think they should have stayed with autobot/decepticon....

But the Autobots would have had to encounter organic planets before, or else Teletran-1 and Sky Spy wouldn't have been able to scan things. It is quite possible that it scans for vehicles first and then animals.

 

This would make sense for when the Insecticons activated and became bugs. There were no vehicles around them when they woke up.

Then again, Teletran-1 did survive an extra-orbital crash.  So maybe it wasn't functioning properly.  But scanning for mechanical life first makes sense too.  It's probably easier for them to format to machines during that era.

I just thought of something, Teletran-1 did scan organic life when they crashed. Ravage, Buzzsaw and Lazerbeak. What's the deal with that.
