Yikes! The dreaded combined form. I love how they kept Grimlock's transformation very similar to his G1 self.

My 2 cents:

 

E. Grimlock, as stated above, seems a bit too "Fisher Price" compared to what he could have been.  Overall, I like this Grimlock, but, for my taste, he would have been much cooler if his yellow parts had been gold and/or silver chromed, for a more G1 accurate homage.  Yeah, I know, Hasbro's been staying away from the chrome lately, but that's just what I would have liked to have seen.

 

E. Swoop seems too beefy to me, and I detest his "grim-reaper-scythe" wings.  Again, IMO, chrome would have been much nicer than the grey plastic wings.  And if they could have been wider, it would have looked cooler as well.  Also, I don't like the blue (instead of red) on his chest.  It's possible they were going for a Diaclone homage, but that's a bit left-fieldish even for Universe. 

 

Granted, the yellow on Grimmy and the blue on Swoop are both possibly intended to be show-accurate homages, but somehow I doubt it.

 

As for the combiner form, I simply don't like it.  The connection is shaky at best, and the bot itself just looks awkward.  It just screams "afterthought" to me.

 

All said, I do still like the set, disadvantages aside.  It's not a great set, but for $10 a bot, it's not horrible, either.

What baffles me about this set is how freakin' rare it is. Wasn't Grim and Swoop in three different Mega assortments already?

Grimlock could be better and bigger but I like the simularities to the orignal... but swoop is the best.. he should have been like this in the past... his dino mode.. is one of my favorites from the last few years and I couldnt stop play'n (pose'n) him.

he just looks like he might just take off on his own.

 

the colors for both could have been "darker" they are a little "fisher price" even for energon...

but overall the the combination of both.. which we all only dreamed of for the G1 versions makes up for any of the flaws...

just my opinion... what do i know.

Agreed.  I passed him up twice.

Rare? Hell, he and Wing Saber is popping up all over the place here.... Maybe there's less scalpers here - just a theory.

Live in NC.. shop in Fayetteville and L'ton... Never SEEN either of the Dinos e/c on the board pics. 

 

Went to Ohio, and the selection was much better in general... even the Toys R Us was better than the ones here... don't know if that means anything, but they had the Alpha Q/Wing Saber wave in full stock out there.

 

But I have to say... it's not as bad as I thought it would be, but I won't buy it.

I actually enjoy this set, and once you figure out the combined mode it is very stable and stands toe-to-toe with all the other combiners ('cept Predaking, who stands above all the others)
