MISB and AFA: good or bad?

Recommended Posts

AFA is abused by people.  What can serve as a nice way to preserve items in one's own collection is now used as an excuse to jack up the price of a collectible.

MISB isn't necessarily evil. I prefer to get my figures boxed and either MIB or MISB because I like to be either the first or second person to touch the actual toy, and I like knowing I'll get all the accessories and paperwork included with the toy. However, I don't believe in charging ludicrous prices just because it's still fresh from the factory.

Good!

If I ever win the lottery, I'll buy all of 'em & open every single one!!!

Those prices aren't set in stone. They're what is accepted by those who are willing to pay for them. If I put my dirty underwear on Ebay for $1,000,000 an somebody buys them, it's not me who ruined the splendic'sdirtyunderwear market by asking so much. It was ruined by people accepting and paying the price. When it comes to ridiculous prices it's us, the fans, who dive them up and then the collectors capitalize on our spending.

...to be honest, there's nothing wrong with exploiting crazy fanboys!    :tard

What are talking about? What abuse? AFA gives a QUOTE, not a set in stone "YOU MUST SELL AT THIS PRICE, OR DIE!" statement. The actual sale price is set by the seller and the final buying price is determined by the buyer.

What are you saying, that collector's aren't allowed to have their collection graded because they might make a profit? OH MY GOD! SOMEONE BETTER WARN THE SCALPERS!

It's their business what they do with it. If someone buys it, yay for them because they knew for a fact what they were getting and they could afford the purchase. How does affect you either way?

Whatever. :roll If you had the one piece that was worth twenty grand and you had collectors knocking at your door willing to pay that price AND MORE, you would so totally sell. :P

That aside, you're a different collector than those who practice MISB collecting. They tend to be VERY serious in what they buy and sell and it's not a cheap hobby so it requires a lot of commitment and care to your collection. Maybe you don't like it, but that doesn't mean that other people can't make a profit off of their own property if someone is willing to pay for it.

I want to get a Tranquito AFA graded and sell it for a thousand dollars on ebay. Actually he is pretty rare now... I wonder if you can get loose toys or weapons graded. AFA 85 Starscream left fist! $500 with BIN!

I got a Transquito MISB for $8 at OTFCC 2004 :D

I buy some toys MISB or MOC if they're reasonably priced, becuase the fun of opening them is worth an extra $2-$5, IMO.  However, I also keep the box, bubble, twitie ties, and rubber bands, too.

AFA isn't that important to me.  I don't pay any attention to them when I browse Ebay.  If the price is too high, I skip that item.  Odds are, there's always at least one seller who hasn't heard of AFA and is selling thier figures cheap.
