MISB and AFA: good or bad?

All of that guy's auctions are BINtastic. Whatever, like SW said, if you're stupid enough to get those and you have that kind of insane dough, go for it. I'll stick to the nice cheap stuff.

I don't see the reason for all these AFA hate. Yes, I know that people with graded toys sell them for exhorbitant amounts, but that's for a niche market that only concerns a minority of collectors. There are collectors out there looking for MISB toys at pristine condition and a lot of con artists out there who will lie about the condition of MISB toys or even claim it is MISB even though it isn't.

The AFA helps this collectors get some more trust, since the condition is already confirmed by an authority that is neutral to both buyer and seller. Also, AFA-graded toys have to be more expensive, because it costs money to grade toys. If some idiot decides to charge a graded toy 100x its original value, that their problem not the AFA. The price increase of graded toys depends on the availability and demand for the toy. Some graded toys only gain 20 to 30% in price not because of the condition but because of the demand, or the toy was already expensive in the first place. G1 Megs is a 20 year old toy, and for an authority to finally prove the actual condition of the toy is actually a good thing, and it is up to the buyer if he is willing to shell out 3 grand for it.

So I guess an AFA graded MIB Fort Max would go for what, 15,000? :roll

Probably. There's always some dork collector out there who wants to take advantage of graded toys, but like was said before, its not the AFA's fault, it's the sellers.

True.

I guess I just find it funny that this grading process gives the sellers the right to even THINK that they can sell an item for 20x it's normal value.

I'm not blaming the AFA directly -- IMO, if you want a way of keeping your toy perfect, great, ship it to them. But to me, using that as an excuse to hike up the price to ridiculous and nigh-unaffordable standards is underhanded. It's like just because someone vacuum-sealed and preserved your pristine figure for you, it gives you the right to demand a few grand.

what does the number next to the AFA  mean?yes I know, what a n00bish question

RR -- that's the grade. It's a 100-point grading system if I'm correct. Usually grades hover between 70 and 80. They grade it based on three criteria -- box condition, window condition, and toy condition. The average is the final grade.

Speaking of which, I've never seen anything past the 90 range. I wonder if there's a 100 AFA item? I wonder if it'd sell for a fraction of the national debt. :D
