Don Murphy Updates for 5/8/2005

Id like to see some of the real dynamic stuff where the characters are using their Transformations in battle: ie

seeker (skywarp?) tosses Jazz - who TFs into a car, skids back a moment before accelerating, tfing and leaping forward.

a Lot of the transformation bits used in the end credits are iconic.  also the commerical breaks - had a lot of character.

Some Kup and HotRod and Prime stuff from early TF:TM is nice too. I am not saying those characters, but the way the Transformations are used as part of the battle.

EDIT: I keep thinking a Matix2 styled Freeway scene but with Bots instead of agents would totally rock! also using aspects of Spidy/Ok battles where in the bots/spidy are constantly jumping back to save random victims while also continuing their fight with the villians (i am thinking spidy's train sequence)

quote my damnself here

I disagree. I'm sure the crew will find a way to make the transformations work amazingly well within the battles without neding to see it happen in the old cartoons.

What is most important to the movie now are scenes that relate the vast cronological history of the TFs spanning from G1 through Beast Machines (an emphasis on the big moments, which I've alluded to more in the DM.net thread), and scenes that highlight character interactions and descriptions.

One of the best (only) scenes to include from outside the "Big 3" series would be the death of Armada Starscream because it so succinctly explains the character both of Megatron and Optimus, and then shows the heroism of an autobot.

Not that they're interchangeable, but it was similar to the end of "Code of Hero" for those who haven't seen it.

But then - reading the script and looking at the "Bible" will tell you what Op and Megs are supposed to act like.

And it goes to reason that Bay will have his mind up on what "makes a hero" with out having to watch Armada (shudders) or a full episode of BW.

And lets face it - as wonderful as CODE was - A) it doesnt stand well out of context (i have tried to show it to people as a way of digging BW/TF but with out all of S1&2 its really flat) B) the story requires a whole 20min, there is no 5min clip that is particularly iconic, and C) again Bay already knows how to make a self-sacrifincing hero story - so CODE was done well, but its just another well done HERO story really

I think the commercial breaks and the clips during the credits are representational not only because they show characters "Transforming" but they carry a style and character with them - that i feel is very integral to G1 TFs.  as opposed to say - BM glowy lights and Armada Pokemon recycled animation splash screens

(Arcee is cool and she can be a motor cycle - thats fine, but god help me if Bay and Murphy start studying Energon and Armada for the style and theme of TFs then we are all doomed)

I didn't mean that the clip needs to be on the DVD b/c it was Jazz, I just thought that the animation sequence was the bomb. You could have any Autobot do it and it would look cool.

no, I agree. I was always bummed that they saved the best animation for the bumpers... I always thought Starscream's was cool too.

Is it just me or did it always look like StarScream was doing a Salute at the end of his "bumper" transform?

A Nazi salute, yeah. Either that or he was displaying his one point of articulation. :lol

Seeing a representation in action is totally different than reading and looking at pictures.

Any decent editor could take "Code of Hero" or any other TF episode down to a couple of minutes and get all the relevant points across. I know I could.

i still dont see what makes Hero specific to Transformers

i agree it was an EXCELLENT "Hero-story" using TF characters.....

But there was nothing that i remember about it that displays what TFs are all about- better than anything else....

to that end - The transmetals bits and Transmutae have better representations of the core idea of TF

It's not. I never said that it was. In fact, I said the death of Starsscream isn't interchangeable with HERO.

I was just using it as reference to let somebody that might not have seen the death of Starscream to know what the episode was like.

What makes the death of Starscream important is his description of how the two leaders treat their factions.

ok - well i have not watched much Armada, and i have a hard time believing that the worst TF-cartoon ever made can be compared to the best Tf-cartoon ever made -- but i will have to take your word for it that that scene in that episode is somehow watchable.

i still hope that Bay/Murphy arent using Armada as any kind of reference point for the new film (again Arcee as Bike is fine with me)

I don't think they'll use it as a reference for anything. All it really was was a craptacular rehash of G1, with the Minicons added for the "gotta catch em all" aspect.

The death of Starscream really is the only watchable moment of the series, IMO (and maybe the death ofCyclonus :)). The death of SS was one of those moments that just kind of helped to describe what the factions were all about.

During Armada, Starscream left the Cons to join the Bots because he was sick of Megatron's abuse, but he always felt like he didn't fit in with his new group (kind of like BW Dinobot). The only ones he could relate to, and the only ones that treated him fairly, were the kids and Optimus.

When it started to become apparent to the Bots that Unicron existed and was a dangerous threat to both factions, SS called Megatron out to try to convince him to join Prime and the Bots against Unicron.

Their little chat took place over a pretty cool sword fight.

Megs wouldn't listen and called SS a traitor and SS went into a speech about what it meant to be an Autobot and why it was a great honor to serve under a leader like Prime. He also told Megs why he was a sucky leader, and why the Cons would never match the Bots.

Then to convince Megs of the threat Unicron posed, he powered up and fired a single blast with his shoulder canons from the surface of Cybertron into space at Unicron. Unicron responded by incinerating SS instantly.

Starscream's blast never even reached Unicron, but the factions united after he died.

It was really a great little moment in the TF Universe.
