Can an individual's spark be transferred ino ANY protoform?  So if I had Cosmos' spark, and wanted to stuff it into a BW era protoform, would that work?  Or is there some initial sentience in the protoform?

Well we've seen protoforms move in BW before the scanning and replication processes.

 

A Protoform is given life when energon is injected into it. It starts the process of fully initiating the Spark...so yeah it can be done...you'd have to put the Spark into a Protoform instead of placing a "Fresh Spark" in it.

I thought the protoforms were existing soldiers any way. Like Protoform X.

the protoform is the transformer before it aquires a new form, rather than reformatting an entire body (e.g. depth charge) by doing this protoform thing, the robot is able to gain a completely ne body

i always seen protoforms as blank slates from witch a spark can enter and change it into a fully matured TF. some times a protoform can be tuned to give the TF sertent features such as sertent alt mode or a become triple changer

I figure that in the "past" that Cybertron likely had a bunch of blank robot bodies in storage that were used for new bodies. Or they were used as drones until a spark was put into it.

I think it's possible to move a spark over to a new protoform provided you have the spark, if you're going to use tm2 Dinobot as an example. Or even A Smokescreen.
