G1 toys suck? WTF!

Recommended Posts

Which is why I think G2 was such a huge series. Regardless of the paint apps. and such, G2 introduced ball joints to the Transformers toy line, if I'm not mistaken.

You are NOT mistaken, sir! :thumb The Cyberjets were 1/8 the size of G1 Jetfire and they were way more articulated.

Not to mention the Stealth bomber and fighter set.

Although it does seem that 1995 was really the year when Hasbro figured that out, which was also when they were developing the first line of BW toys.

1. G1 toys are not action figures. Judge them as such and you will be disappointed. Judge them as what they are and they live up to the legend.

There is more to G1 than just nostalgia.

ummmm ... what are they?

You said they aren't action figures.  They aren't models because the scale is way off for most of them.  Especially when you throw in ones like Bumblebee and Cliffjumper.  They aren't statues (despite people crying about the lack of posability) because statues generally don't move at all.

So ... what are they?

Just so I know what I've been collecting for all these years.

From Webster's...

Main Entry: action figure

Function: noun

: a small-scale figure usually of a superhero used especially as a toy

So, G1's are action figures.

The first two years of G1 are not what I would call action figures. They break if you breathe on them, and aren't really made to survive children. I broke most of mine as a child. A requirement for an action figure is the ability to survive being an action figure. G1 transformers fail this test miserably.

I don't really consider Alternators action figures. I consider them 1/24th scale model cars that can do things like, lets say, transform into robots. So what if they aren't a specific scale, or some of them transform into things other than cars. The original G1 figures were more models that could transform into robots. There is room to argue the point, but they were models more than they ever were action figures, even if most kids treated them as action figures anyway and broke them.

None of my G1s broke besides Metroplex, who was thrown down the basement stairs, and I played with them everyday...roughly. Hell, I used to throw the at each other. (I was 3).

There's really no room for argument. All Transformers are action figures, and when you transform them you are "playing" with them, no matter your age. If you only display them, that doesn't make them models or statues.

BTW - Madhammer, the comment about shakin' a kid was a play on a Chris Rock joke.

Thanks... I'm sadly out of the loop (and about ten years older than you, judging from your post). :inhrf

did anyone luckout and get ahold of the sideswipe reissue. it's the only one i don't have.

yeah i think Casualoblivian is trying to justify the fact that he collects childrens play things... this is something that we have all had to come to terms with on our own.  But don't be fooled CB, transformers are and forever will be toys

Actually what i think Causual Oblivion is trying to get at is:

Transformers were an actionfigure/model Hybrid

Just like StarWars when it came out.  G1 can be likened to anything you want to compare it to - but (other than the diaclone...blah blah blah) it was quite simply a whole new genre of plaything

Yes they were action figures

Yes they were models

Yes they were Bricks (i am building my very own model fort out of Dautsun Farilady bricks)

They were all these things -

But they were not Action figures in the sense of Star Wars figures or Barbie/Gi-Joe dolls NOR were they Hotwheels....

They were truely "More than Meets the Eye" on every level.  (sorry to be cliche there)

That by definition (again just like SW) can NOT be repeated.

That being said - i think Oblivion is beating his point into the ground

:pfx and the first person who mentions Alternators or 20th Prime gets a knee in the nutsack. They're still toys.

:tflaugh as far as i'm concerned, even the Hard Hero and Palisades statues/busts can't be justified with "adult collectible" logic because in the end they are still representations of toys/cartoons.  Just deal :thumb
