How exactly did Bob Skir almost RUIN Transformers?

Recommended Posts

My kids don't hate it. They love it. The only people who "hated" Beast Machines were the G1 fans who couldn't get past a techno-organic Cybertron.

BullBlot. I didn't mind the technorganic Cybertron, I just wanted a decent explanation for why it was neccesary. The show never provides that, other than it was 'right' because the ORacle said so. We were being given a moral lesson with neither parable nor example... and the whole story hinged on that.

Like I said, it skipped the basics. It needed more 'meat' in places, and sacrificing a couple of the pointless 'run away!' action scenes would have been enough time. As it was, nada.

For me, it had nothing to do with being a G1 fan. I preferred the Beast Wars animation anyway... but it had everything to do with failing some basic storytelling elements - at any level.

I think it was way too mature for most kids.

I think the show couldn't decide if it wanted to be mature or not - which, from what I gathered, was due largely to Hasbro's interference. They wanted Power Rangers, after all. That schizo point of view impacted the writing on many levels, getting some very good episodes followed up with utter trash, and story arcs that relied on things outside of the character action to be resolved.

I just like the show.

Just understand that you're in a minority with that- and that it isn't just because there are G1 purists who hated it before giving it a chance (though there are some), or that others aren't artsy enough to 'get it'.

I'm not a G1 purist, I'm a fairly heavy artsy guy myself - with a martyr complex to boot - and I just didn't like the show.

Judging from opinion on this board, I'm not in the minority. This isn't bigbot.com, and it's not 2001 anymore. Not that it should even matter.

And if you couldn't figure out why it was important for Cybertron to be reformatted, then there's nothing I can say that will change your mind about the show.

Because something was flawed in the machine existence? Tell that to - I dunno, the other 14 Generations of Transformers that seemed just fine.

Because it would stop Megatron's virus? Nope, didn't do that either.

Because it granted them the ability to save the world? Well, no, in fact, their bodies were WEAKER than before.

Excuse me so much for not 'getting' it.

I guess I just don't feel as much angst about the whole thing. I just accept the premise of the story. I don't see any great reason why I shouldn't. I'm not biased against it.

The way I look at it is, Megatron was right. Machines don't need sparks. They don't need independence or free will. They're machines. But that's not what the Oracle wanted. The Oracle wanted Cybertron to be alive and free, not enslaved by a single dictatorial consciousness. Organic life represents that freedom and individuality in BM. And so in order for Cybertron to be freed - and to "transcend its destiny" - it needed to move beyond mere robotic "life". It needed to become a living world, as it once was. You ask why it didn't need to happen before? Who knows. It's called retcon. It happens all the time (i.e. "sparks" in BW). But again, it doesn't bother me b/c I think it's a cool story. And it's the only TF show I've ever watched that has impressed me on an artistic level, both in the story arc (which is more intentional than you believe it to be), and the visualization. I may be alone in this, but I think the character designs in BM are awesome. Sure they don't look G1-ish or even BW-ish, but again - who cares. I just like it.

Anyway, that's pretty much what it comes down to for me. I have gotten a huge amount of enjoyment out of the show, and I will continue to do so. If you don't want to, that's fine.

Three reasons why I didn't like Beast Machines by Beast Girl

1.  I couldn't get past what Blackarachnia looked like in that show.  She looked like an anorexic pigmy.

2.  I didn't like way BM ended either.  Bob Skir left  too many loop holes in the plot of Beast Machines.  These loopholes were big enough to drive a MAC truck through.

3.  There's no clear explaination as to what happened to Obsidian and Stryka after they were catapaulted into orbit. Were they rescued?  Are their bodies still orbiting around Cybertron?  These are questions that have been left unanswered.

I found the BM too technical and in depth, you couldnt miss one episode cuz then you'd have no clue of the story, anyways ino the beast wars were much better, didnt get as weird as the BM.

Each to his (or her) own.... I loved the BM character designs because (for one thing) they allowed for so much more expressiveness. Blackarachnia was actually one of my favorites..

What were the loopholes you saw in the plot? Just curious.

There actually was a scene written where the Maximals offer to bring Strika and Obsidian back to Cybertron, but they turn them down b/c they feel that they don't deserve it. It was just one of those things that got cut b/c of time considerations, as often happens.

I believe I read somewhere that there was a cut scene in Endgame 3 where Obsidian and Stika decided not to undergo the Technoorganic process as thier punishment for siding with Megatron.

I personally don't give a f*ck if any of you douche-breaths like Beast Machines.  I love it.

I'm also better than you. :thumb

I think people get so worked up because the ending to BM just makes it all so final

if you didnt like the techno organic thing...  it just blows the whole transformers continuity irreversably in a different direction

I mean seriously changing Cybertron so radically...  hard to get around that but by scrapping the entire histroy and starting over like they have

it was still a kick ass show though
