Michael Bay to direct TF movie...? *UPDATED*

Recommended Posts

Michael Bay's not going to be the one to add or remove character from the movie. That will already be, or not be, on the page.

Lucas.

'nuff said.

Lucas was the writer, in plus of the director. So that's different.

okay fine, I'll explain.

First of all, he didn't write the second one alone. But my point is this: the scripts for Ep1 and Ep2 aren't bad IMO. In fact I think they're quite good. But they were directed poorly. And that's what I'm trying to say.

The dialogue and pacing were atrocious...both writing aspects. But Lucas is also a so-so director. He'd be the first to tell you.

Have you actually read the scripts to those two films and compared them to better sci-fi/adventure fare?

pacing = editing... those movies were only two hours long because every shot lasted two-three seconds longer than it needed to. The dialogue could have been given a lot more life if a better director (i.e. one who worked better with actors and who wasn't so impatient) had helmed them.

Anyway, with Star Wars I don't expect "great sci-fi" - I only compare the writing to the original movies, and it isn't of a significantly lower quality than the writing in those films. (How many frickin' times did we need to hear "your thoughts betray you" in RotJ?)

But this is all a big tangent.

All I'm trying to say is that character development matters, and a director is the one who carries the vision for the film. If he's not good with character development, it's not going to be there in the movie. Again, I'm not saying that the TF movie needs to be an art house film or a chick flick. I'm only saying that you can make a kick-butt adventure movie that ALSO features characters you emotionally invest in (Raiders of the Lost Ark being a stellar example).

An editors job is to bring the script to fruition using the shots. They use the script as a blueprint to assemble the final cut. Their job is more to hit beats than to pace the movie. The writer sets the pace.

No amount of directorial patience could have coaxed a worthwhile performance from this...

I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women and the children, too. They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals. I HATE THEM.

I mostly agree with what you're saying about character development and the duties of a director, but in this particular circumstance, with the main (hopefully :tftongue) characters being CGI most of the characterization is going to come from back story, and dialogue, and character interaction, which IMO Bay's not going to have much to do with besides direct what's already on the page.

You're forgetting the "sand-Amidala" analogy. :tftongue

Michael Bay...Michael Bay...hmm...I won't lie to you and say that "Pearl Harbor" and "Bad Boys II" really pissed me off, but it's easy to blame the director since he's the one in the public eye. Really, I could easily think of worse people to direct this movie, and Bay just isn't on that list. So, as with all rumors, we'll just wait and see...

Hey, I loved that part of AotC! One of the few scenes in the movie that resonated with me. But I chalk that up mostly to Hayden Christiansen.

But anyway, I guess you're right. I just have a history of not liking Michael Bay movies. For me, he represents a particular mindset that I have a really hard time identifying with. All of the pseudo-Norman Rockwell imagery in Armageddon with the kids running through the streets of Anytown USA in slow motion with the toy rockets in their hands.... :roll :puke :tdown And the cheesy GI Joe "let's get 'em!" testosterone high that permeates his movies.... But then again, this is an adaptation of a cartoon, so maybe he's better suited to the job than I think.

DANMIT you've ALL got it f#$kin' wrong!! F#$kin' Qu3n+1n +4r3n+1n0 is going to make this F$#kin' FILM!!

That'd be great if I wanted to see Bumblebee get decapitated in slow motion.

No, because then Bludgeon would be in the movie.

he'd be like the only TF in the movie... along with Nightbird.

And Bumblebee would actually be referred to as "Mr. Yellow."

I may be one of the few, but I didn't mind Armageddon all that much. It was cheesy and hokey, sure, but it didn't really mind it.

Can't comment on Pearl Harbour because I didn't see it. And the Bad Boys movies .... Not the style of film I usually go for, so I passed on seeing them as well.

I'm of the opinion that given a half-decent script Michael Bay should be able to pull off a half-decent movie. Maybe not Oscar-winning, but certainly not Gigli-class either.

Although, if we're picking dream directors .... George Romero would be an interesting choice .... :tftongue

I have always said I'd love to see P. T. A. take a swing at it....ahhhh to dream...

That is true. If Micheal Bay does end up directing a cartoon out of teh 80s what better americanized/patriotic rabble than GIjoe. :thumb

As for Transformers.

Please forward to Don Murphy. Please be absolutely certain Micheal Bay steers clear the hell away from transformers.

Thankyou. :thumb
