Michael Bay to direct TF movie...? *UPDATED*

Recommended Posts

i really hope he doesn't get it (pearl harbour sucked, especially in a historical sense" the 2nd world war started in 1941 when japan bombed pearl harbour" BOLLOCKs it was 1938 when germany invaded poland) i really REALLY hope he's not director (goes to don muphey's board to see if it is truth)

Well in all honesty, the US didn't get involved in WWII until after Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941. It wasn't supposed to insinuate that that was how WWII itself started but the events that got the US got involved in it. (in essence thats when WWII began for the US) So in that sense it wasn't historically inaccurate.

it's just the fact that in the movie there wasn't even any reference to there being a war (apart from 5 minutes)

If it is Bay, at least he has some big budget movies to his credit, albeit some total $hit movies. I did like The Rock. Bad Boys movies usually have great actions sequences, but anything w/ will smith in it is junk in my opinion.

Could be worse...X-Men III's newly announced director Matthew Vaughn has NO released movies to his credit (although I head good things about the upcoming Layer Cake).

Well, "The Island" looks to have some promise, and although they weren't going to win any Oscars, I actually enjoyed "The Rock," and "Armageddon".

In the same vein, "Star Wars" isn't going to win any Oscars, but the preexsiting continuity and history (and ridiculous amount of action in the last three) make the films a lot of fun for us. So it will (hopefully) be the same with Transformers. At least now we know we're going to have some ridiculously cool action sequences.

Now don't get me wrong. I would never choose Bay first. I'd much prefer to get a director like Singer/Spielberg/Raimi/Cameron, because I want to see a full fleshed film, not JUST an action movie, but It could be worse.....I could be directing it :tftongue

EDIT - Also, who knows what this guy might be like without Bruckheimer. With a producers like Spielberg, Murphy and DeSanto, he might turn out a totally different kind of film. They obviously seem to be very pleased with "The Island", so....

call my Dr N00b but what has this baaaaaay buy done?

AH CRAP!

Michael Bay to direct Transformers, huh. I had thought Steven Spielberg would have more sense than to even consider that. As a director Bay knows how to blow the hell out of nearly everything on screen but knows absolutely nothing about realism or substance. Personally i'd rather see this being directed by someone like Jonathan Mostow or Martin Campbell. Little know directors but know there stuff. As far as bay it could be worse. Think either Joel Shcumacher, Brett Ratner, or McG. Teh horror. :eek

The director should be M. Night Shyamalan.

-spyke is... Primus!

You're confusing directing with writing. What kind of movie do you think SS himself would've turned out given the Bad Boys 2 script? It might not have been as bad, but it would certainly not have been good. Don't forget this guy has to work with what's on the page. You can get an idea of just how constricting a poor script is to a director by reading through a few at script-o-rama.com ...

Realism ... Transformers.

Realism? Transformers?

... Realism? TRANSFORMERS???!!

They're fcuking cars, cats, and cassettes that turn into intelligent robots!! GET SERIOUS.

I like The Rock, I enjoy the Bad Boys movies ... I don't really care about his other work as entertainment, but I'll point out one thing to his credit that I very much welcome -- he does some very nice action cinematography. It's definitely some of the better stuff in the business.

splendic else pointed out you fanboys are confusing writing with directing. He's not doing the script and the story, he's interpreting the screenplay onto film. For that, based on the sequences I've seen from his career, I'd welcome his direction. Bay does blockbuster action work and obviously with Spielburg and Dreamworks (right?) behind this, they're looking for a blockbuster. GET OVER IT. It's not going to be some drawn out very thickly driven story with everyone at the library talking about what has happened and what is going to happen with nothing really happening. It's going to be an understandable story with lots of things blowing up.

I got a question, why does everyone think films need "Substance"? If your looking for that go watch an art film. Transformers will most likely be an Action film, not a Drama/Action or Action/Drama. Heck the tv show was an Action cartoon and the first movie was almost all action. As long as this is a good action film I for one will be happy.

I'll paraphrase Don from sometime last year "We wont see the Transformers sitting around talking about their feelings."

At the same time, let's not underestimate the significance of a director's role. A director may or may not be able to do much with a mediocre script, but we've all seen instances of a mediocre director screwing up a good script.

It *is* also possible to have a blow-em-up action film that has characters that you care about. No one is questioning Michael Bay's ability to pull off large-scale action sequences. The concern is the character angle, at least for me. He tends to paint his characters with a very broad brush, and rarely ventures beyond Hollywood stereotype.

You may say that "characters" don't matter in a film like this, but I would point you towards X-Men and Spiderman in response. I'm not just interested in a two-hour action sequence. There has to be some emotional connection between the characters and the audience for this film to be memorable in any way, and to date I haven't seen anything Bay has done that would convince me that he could pull that off.
