The best leaders actually care enough about their soldiers to do something like draw fire from them.

ok, in splendic's sig, he shows a screencap from a G1 S3 episode in which Wheelie is lying on the ground and magnus jumps in front of him to shield wheelie's body from enemy fire. WTF is up with that? as if magnus didn't need another reason for why he is completely unfit for leadership. at least Rodimus never did something stupid like that.

has a tf leader ever done anything which made you question how fit they were to lead their teams?

Yeah, Optimus Prime being all like "we cannot endanger these humans!" and basically turning himself and his team into a bunch of targets. I bet Trailbreaker rolled his eyes every time Prime said that. (And no, I'm not explaining what I mean. You figure it out.)

And then there was Rodimus Prime, who basically came right out and said that he didn't even want to be the leader in the first place. 'nuff said

And decided to blow up a planet because he didn't want the Decepticons to get control of it.

Damn, good thing the Cons didn't want to take over Earth anymore by 2006. :wtf

it was ultra magnus who blew up that planet actually. i just love his line when he decides to do it. "I've never seen any planet as beautiful as this in the entire galaxy... Ok give me the bomb"

some stupid decisions have been noble ones though, like primal in beast wars, trading himself for airrazor so she might survive, going up in that stasis pod to blow up that vok unicron thing and taking prime's spark into his own body to save the entire universe

I get tired of all the "Wheelie SUXX0RZ!!1" stuff. He wasn't any lamer than Blurr, Wreck-Gar, Sky Lynx, Kup, Arcee, or.... pretty much any of the other S3 Autobots. The only ones I liked in S3 were Galvatron, Scourge, and Cyclonus.

wheelie bashing is getting mighty old now, he did his best it wasnt his fault he got lumbered with being around daniel all the time

I concur.

The only ones I liked in S3 were Galvatron, Scourge, and Cyclonus.

I also prefer these villians more than the lead baddies from S1/2.

The Megatron/Starscream interactions were pretty stupid. Megatron should have blown Starscream away at the first sign of back-stabing treachery and cowardice. Galvatron wasted 'Screamer at the first opportunity.

*continues painting fingernails pink* ;)

I couldn't stand most of S3. Except for that episode "Call of the primatives." The animation in that was awesome.

Other than that, most of the stories were bleh. on occasion, an okay one would pop up.

Now, as for leaders doing stupid Blot, well, if Megatron were portrayed as even HALF the leader he was supposed to be, he would have offed Starscream at the first opportunity. And if Starscream was HALF as smart as he was supposed to be, he would have been FAR more discreet about backstabbing Megs.

As for Prime's stumblings, well...even "the Trukk" screws up now and again. Not to mention the script. I can just imagine Optimus and Megatron holding a couple of human scriptwriters up by the scruff of their necks, asking them what the hell they were smoking when they were writing season 3.

Megatron: "I say we waste these pathetic fleshlings, Prime."

Prime: "No."

Megatron: "Let me guess...your DAMNABLE ethic of 'protecting all life?'"

Prime: "Not that....it's just that human guts are a Starscream to clean off of chrome."

Megatron: "True. Let's just STEP on them!"

Prime: "Hmmm..............."

I have to disagree on a lot of this. The S3 toy line was lame yes, but as characters IMO they were a good cast. The only one I would have to say is the lamest is Blurr. Rodimus, Ultra Magnus, Cup, Arcee, and Springer made season3 in itself worth watching. Galvatron was freeking obnoxious just as Megatron was, and Scourge really wasn't all that cool until Rid came around. Pink fingernails indeed. :wtf

On topic, sure the autobots can get on each others nerves (wheelie/Blurr) but when push comes to shove a good bot never abandons another. Ultra Magnus jumped in and saved Wheelie for that very reason. Not because most in the fandom see him as an obnoxious little f**ktard but because they don't abandon there own. This is the same reason why Optimus didn't shoot Hotrod, and instead sacrificed himself.

Well Starscream never realy Betrayed the Decepticons, and Megatron knew he wasn't smart enuogh to be a Major threat, blus Starscream was a Pretty good warior.

In all fairness, there was a good dynamic between Rodimus, Magnus, Springer, Arcee, Kup, and even Blurr, when they were all together as a group. The problem is that they seldom were together. (Heck, what even happened to Springer? He was totally AWOL from the final G1 episodes.)

What made the pre-TF:TM era work was that you were given time to see the 'bots relate to one another. You felt like they were part of a team. In Season 3, Rodimus Prime wasn't even around half of the time, and when he *did* show up, it was only to complain about how much he sucked. Watching FFoD, I wish that there had been more "group time" and less focusing on individual characters. Plus the setting was always changing. Are the Autobots based on Earth or on Cybertron(for instance)?

Anyway, I guess the point is that there was *potential* with the S3 'bots, but it sadly remained unactualized potential IMO.

BTW I also agree with you about Galvatron.... I think I just wanted to like him b/c he was so badass in TF:TM and I loved the toy so much. (I also had Cyclonus and Scourge.... coincidence?)
