Actually the one in the dark packaging is a real Transformer from the planet Cybertron, shrunk by a shrink-ray and imprisoned in that box unable to move until the seal is broken. If you buy that one and open it, he'll try to escape the first time you're not looking at him if you're lucky. If you're not lucky, he might be desperate to escape and might actually fire on you in an escape attempt.

The story is that last fall, Hasbro did their usual midline subtitle (this case, Powerlinx Battles). Because of the wacky distribution, and the desire for the line to look consistant, toys from wave 2/3 to then were repackaged in the more commen red boxes.

The black box versions will likely be the rarer of the two.

1st n second release... some people prefer the first release of the box because... its just the first release! (they are getting harder to find) n i think the box looks better... but there is no difference in toys :beer

fans seem to prefer the original more, because of "first release" statis...parents and kids who dont care go with the red cause it gives it that "new" feel
