WHY DID G1 DIE AND YET.....

Recommended Posts

Every new series counts as a reboot, even when they're in the same continuity. New product, new packaging, bla bla bla. Hasbro tried to do just this in 1986. Only it didn't work. Too extreme or not extreme enough -- who knows.

Be warned -- you are treading on "Madhammer soap box territory" here...

too late!! :eek

I think that the fandom has only to look at itself if it wants to know why such retarded shows as RiD, Armada, and Energon are what passes for "Transformers" nowadays. The backlash against Beast Machines was SO violent (after so much had been invested in it by Hasbro, Mainframe, et al.) that Hasbro essentially said, "screw it, we're not gonna bother with quality programming -- we'll just dub some Jap crap like everyone else is doing and make $$$." And since the RiD toys were cool, no one cared. And when Armada came along, the fans continued to buy, even though it was even worse than RiD (at least RiD had cool toys). By the time Energon came along, fans were already in the "maybe it'll be cool this time" mindset. And all the homages kept people happy enough to not mind the fact that the TF show still was not worth watching.

Fun facts you may not have been aware of:

1. Hasbro originally planned to follow up Beast Machines with a kickass-looking series that would have brought back vehicular-based TFs, and continue the TF story line that started with G1. ("Transtech" for those of you who don't know -- all we have left today is a bunch of awesome concept art and a single prototype.)

2. Hasbro also had plans to produce a theatrical TF movie in 2001, but abandoned its plans after the post-BM implosion. I know you're thinking, "who cares, they're making a TF movie now." But a TF movie that tied into the G1/BW/BM continuity?

Oh well (for the 1,000th time)....

Well spoken as ever. :tflaugh

However, I don't blame the fans for BMs demise.. I mean, I had high expectations for them to deliever the same ammount of badass that Beast Wars became.. something the grips you and holds you in place, watching characters grow and face challenges, failures.. fighting against epic odds and what not. But sadly, BM just did not deliever.. the concept was funky at best.. it was way too dark on the extreme end.. I miss the occasional light hearted humor.. I miss the exchanges between the crew members.. the art style didn't really do much for me either. BW had some beautiful scene work, lighting, water effects.. and we get this highly stylized near cell shaded crap in it's place. The idea behind Transforming for Maxies was just odd.. Lets not forget Savage/Noble.. I don't even know what to call them anymore. You can't call them robots.. but you also can't call them entirely organic.. so what they bloody hell are they?

The toy sales were down on these things, because a lot of them were just fugly. Vehicons definetly were fugly.. with a few exceptions. Maxies looked alright for the most part. It took me a long time to even approach buying one.. my first was Universe Skywarp.. surprizing how well Jetstorm looks in those colors.

It's not the fans fault they did not like BM. I think Hasbro should of kept with making Beast Wars a little while longer instead of pushing mainframe to wrap it up. As I remember, they wanted to do a 4th season.. and they had a TON of new material and characters to play with.. TM2 Black Aracnia, TM2 Cheetor, TM2 Dinobot.. Depthcharge, Tigerhawk... and it would be nice if they went into Tarantulus's background a little more often.. I know they do this in the comics and what not.. but they keep hinting that he's something different than others.. but they never tell you what he's really doing in the show.

Wow.. end that rant..

Damn your "Maximize"

To stay on track, G1 died because G1 had run its course. All things come and go, and for G1, that was 1990 when Action Masters became a focal point for the line.

Armadaverse is still going because despite what fans think of the shows, sales of the associated products are still strong. Bear in mind that Transformers was going pretty strong in 84-86 as well.

Something else to consider is that while we may remember a time when Transformers were truley robots in disguise, kids haven't been exposed to that, to them, all the stuff out now is fine. And kids are the true measure of a line's success.

Excellent.

First of all, what we retroactively refer to as "G1" these days ran from 1984-1990 (it lasted even longer in Europe), and consisted of several sub-lines such as "Pretenders", "Micromasters" or "Action Masters".

Armada started in 2002. Hardly a comparison.

Second: The crucial turning point for G1 was in fact TF:TM, when Hasbro decided to kill off all well-known characters in order to introduce new toys to the market. The first EVER toy to be promoted as a new incarnation of an existing character was Goldbug, followed by Powermaster Optimus Prime, then the Pretender Classics and finally the Action Masters.

These days, we get multiple versions (and sometimes even size classes) of each character, and every new series has versions of at least a few central characters such as Optimus Prime/Convoy, Megatron/Galvatron, Starscream/Nightscream and Hot Shot/Hot Rod. No more "There goes Optimus Prime, say hello to Rodimus! Well, now it's time for Fortress Maximus, next up is God Ginrai, to be followed by Star Saber and then Dai Atlas".

i hate purists, period. Face it g1 died a long time ago, and as much as i loved it (what little i saw, i now own the dvds) ITS OVER. LONG LIVE ARMADA, sorry but its true, sure the cartoons are a little stale (yes even energon) but the toys really rock, and the comics rule. Not to go all religious fanatic on you but... CYBERTRON WILL CONVERT THE UNBELIEVERS! sorry...

One day Cybertron will be over, sorry but it's true. :tftongue

Im just admiring your sarcasm.

That, and pointing out, that Armada/Energon/Cybertron are the same thing/story/generation.

Meh. from what I've seen of Galaxy Force so far it looks as if I won't be watching much of it either.

And besides, G1 is still alive in all the homages and re-visited storylines from the Armadaverse. :tftongue
