What killed G1

Recommended Posts

Toys come, toys go, and while the old toyline died out due to some poor ideas and gimmicks ( and pretty much every other reason mentioned by everyone else ), G1 Transformers somehow clicked with a lot of us and the fact that TFans.com exists suggests that it's still going. Beastwars could never have had the same dedicated following.

But it does. There are people out there and on these boards who had never even seen the original series and Beast Wars was their first exposure to TF's. It has a dedicated following because of it's kickass writing.

It's true about the good writing, but this isn't called "Beastwars.com" (which is a Hasbro site) or "The Unicron Battles-dot-whatever". This is a Transformers fans site which includes Beast Wars (and rightfully so), but it all began with G1

So Marcus, are you suggesting that at one point we were all worried about getting laid, but now having done that we're back for more? That could probably be true to some extent, and it's got a certain ring to it. However, I was in kindergarten when I started getting T-formers, and not a lot older by the time I stopped. I know that's kind of young, but I could transform every single one I had, without instructions! I'd like to think I had good taste, too. The thing is, I, as a child, eventually lost interest. I can tell you exactly why I lost interest, too. I stuck it out through the Micromasters, and the Pretenders, and every other lame gimmick.

However, I remember going to the local Wal-Mart with my father one day, and he was going to buy me a new Transformer. As usual, I was excited, and I looked everywhere for the Transformers, but they weren't in their usual place. After some searching, I discovered the ACTION MASTERS. I took one look at them, realized these were Transformers that DIDN'T TRANSFORM, and I realized that was the end. For the first time, I returned home toyless, and I didn't buy another Transformer until Beast Wars Inferno came along. It wasn't until RiD that I really got back into things.

That's right, and Beast Wars was actually called "Beast Wars Transformers" (or "Transformers: Beast Wars". Either way, it still had Transformers in the title.)

Anyway, I'm not trying to argue, all I am saying is there were a lot of people who didn't give a rats' ass about G1 (or TF's for that matter.) until they saw Beast Wars. So for them, it really was their first exposure to Transformers. Now, while I agree that without G1 the show would have never been made, I also think that BW can stand alone when it comes to a following. It's also one of the (very pivotal) reasons this fandom exists right now.

The one thing that showed me that was when I was at work and I asked a co-worker of mine if he had ever heard of Transformers. He replied "Yeah, Beast Wars was great." He's about four years younger than I am (I think), and he's never really seen G1.

I just don't like the idea that Beast Wars is considered some kind of seperate entity. It's PART of the reason that TFans.com exists, along with G1, BM, RID, Armada and Energon.
