What killed G1

Recommended Posts

you think it could be, that not every kid had a chance, or saw TFTM, and going into season 3 was bit of a narritive jump?

I never saw the movies as a kid, and I found the shift, hard to follow what all had happened. But I did watch what s3 I could, and enjoyed it. The writing, seemed more mature, and the characters had more depth, it felt.

(the GI Joe writers, had come on board)

Plus, for this area, s3 was aired in the morning, Energon style, as apposed to TF 1-2, which was afternoon. Big difference here. No body gives a crap about morning toons. The afternoon, was kid primetime.

No. BW -resurrected- the TFs.

G2 and RiD 'kept it alive'. BW really put the line back on the map and back at the top of the game.

That sucks, it was aired in the afternoon here.

G1 died slowly over a period of three to four years, but IMO the initial seed was planted in TF:TM the moment the lights in Prime's eyes went out.

I agree. Prime was an icon and hero to all. The death of him and other favs shocked alot of fans. It wasn't a bad thing but it set a "real" tone to the whole series which was never surpased.

There's probably a lot of problems that all lead up to the combination of the downfall of G1.

The toys. When G1 first came out, die cast parts, and rubber tires. However, that got damn expensive, and since they were allready pricey as far as retail went, the manufacturing costs got even more expensive, so they had to find ways to make 'em cheaper.

As for the gimmics, yeah that kind of dragged. While the gimmic used to be Transforming Robots, somone decide that it wasn't enough, and had to start making them do stuff... which got out of hand... headmasters and targetmasters were cool, you really got 2-3 TF's for the price of 1...

As far as the TV show went... they dumbed it down too much. The serious concepts of the first 2 seasons went out the window, and it became so much pablem for the kids to watch. A good TV show has provocative and deep issues running in it, and, even an episodic one should progress slowly (but not too fast mind you, like some anime shows where you miss an episode, you're lost). Make them address concepts that might be a bit over your head, but, since the show's a good one, it'll be around in a few years, when you will.

That, and well, the toys of the 80's kind of lost, as fads went out, and Transformers, G.I. Joe, and He-Man went the way of the Dinobots...

Say, what were the toys of the 90's? G2, and Beast Wars were there, but what was around beside it?

Incidently, G.I. Joe's first few seasons were increadably expensive to produce.

its not Prime's death, but that bring him back made it all meaningless.

That was hard for kids to take, and I say this as I remember my classmates talking, back in the 6th-7th grade. After that, something that should have been final and made us care, was like nah nah, fooled you.

We just lost intrest.

And 'serious concepts of season 2" hahahaha

funny.

I remember that when S3 started, I pretty much was like WTF? Not because I hadn't seen TF:TM as I was one of the few people in my area who saw it it when it hit the theaters, so I had known about Prime's death and all of the other characters from S1 & 2.

After seeing the film, I was excited about where the story was going to go from here, how Rodimus Prime and Ultra Magnus were going to protect the galaxy from the menacing threat of a new ass kickin' Decepticon warlord, Superion going one on one with Bruticus, Metroplex and Trypticon duking it out day after day in kickass battles.

And then I saw Five Faces Of Darkness. The animation was horrible, Galvatron had an annoyingly squeaky voice....The initial story for FFOD was pretty good, but the characters themselves were poorly written, there was too much focus on this nimrod named Wheelie and I couldn't keep track of who was supposed to be dead or who was an Autobot or Decepticon because they kept using random character designs from seasons 1 & 2.

Also, as S3 progressed, really stupid errors started to happen, like in "Fight or Flee", where Brawl is hanging out with Galvy in the control room while Bruticus is moving crap around at the SAME TIME. Apparently, someone gave the gestalts their own individual smaller bodies. Bruticus and Defensor just had to have their own bodies instead of only appearing when the five components merged.

And all of the episodes were in a random order. And it seemed that now they were attempting to try and give the show some kind of continuity to it (loose, but it was there).

And when Prime returned, I was hoping for Powermaster Prime so he could kick everyone's asses.

But instead we get S1 & 2 Prime. and then Rebirth.

After a while, I had started to get into the comics more, as the stories seemed more interesting.

So yeah, Season 3 , Pretenders and Action Masters killed G1.

woah, back up your modern bitterness fandom train there, missy. :)

Funny, but the quality of animation, (way before VCRs were every really taking off, and there was very little to compare it to), was never really noticed by us kids. Same with a lot of the errors.

This, is something, that has only really been noticed sence the internet, VHS and DVD's.

So, thats a modern day answere, but its doesnt really represent what was going on, when we were kids. When all we cared about and noticed was "cool, did you see that? and wow, i cant believe that happened!"

And I remember 5 faces of Darkness, being all the rage, at lunchroom talk. And in a good way.

heh. well, funny, but the quality of animation, (way before VCRs were every raeally taking off, and there was very little to compare it to), was never really noticed by us kids. Same with a lot of the errors.

Very good point. But I do know that when I saw FFOD I would be watching it (My family had a VCR) and all of the sudden I would see a guy who had Grimlock's color scheme in the Decepticon army, or a seeker who looked suspiciously like Thundercracker.

The story of FFOD was very interesting, but I also immediately lost interest whenever Blurr and Wheelie showed up on screen. Because they were so damn annoying.

Oh, and no one wanted to talk Transformers at school, because you would get beat up. I know, as I was the only one who wanted to talk about it.
