PE reflector SUPERSIZED KO vs the REAL DEAL

Recommended Posts

The reviews are out there but I don't believe there has been a side by side yet.

Picts speak volumes.

But to put things short and sweet.

KO Supersized -

- Made of "Shampoo Bottle" plastic, much like the old "Sky-Carry" toy that's fairly common. Pro's and cons to this, it's better than brittle snap if you look at it funny plastic, but the flexability and consistency might mean it will be hard to custom paint.

- colors are so ugly but you can't look away! I believe one would need 3 sets to mix and match parts to get just about each set to have matching bots. Even then none of the variations will be perfect.

- Loss of detail in the face, shoulders, hips and the center of the lense for viewfinder.

- Loss of articulation in the head (hollowed out), mid section and feet.

- Simplification of some of the accessories, such as the shield missing the handle, shotguns, lense is OK, annoying you can't take the sniper rifle apart, or have the bot hold the shield right, but its not a huge deal

PE Reflector -

- Too dang small

- Pose-ability awesome

- Accessories awesome

- colors awesome

- design awesome

- price, not so great

If you want to get your hands on probably the best version of Reflector that ever will be, and can break your piggy bank, with no regard to scale, get the PE Original.

If you want to boost your Classics army, and have a bot that's about to scale with the rest, plus you're a cheap collector, get the KO.

I picked up the PE at Comic Con, Philly for $100 over the summer and the only bad thing about it is the size. Said that all along. The KO is very good, original design is pure magic and even with the crap plastic and simplification it carries over nicely.

I would LOVE to see more larger KO's of newer toys like Warpath (maroon and a green version) windcharger and maybe even Cosmos. But honestly I would not side step the orignal PE Scout Force and just keep the KO.

I plan on having both on display, a little classic G1 size compression. Camera mode for the original with the KO (custom painted if I can help it) standing on the side.

PS I did a little leg swap because I like the camera mode with the green legs in the middle and purple on the outside. Real simple trick.

Thanks for this post. I have had my eye on this set for a few weeks. I have been waiting for the PE set to hit clearance, not enough bang for the buck as small as they are.

Are the guns that come with the KO 5mm posts? Can they fit in the hands of other CHUG bots?

I dont customize very much, but I figured the KO would need it. What is it exactly that makes you think it would be hard to paint them? Im just not picking up what you are putting down there.

I have picked up KO plastic model kits, made of similar plastic to the KO reflector, and paint didn't stick to the plastic very well. Because it flexes or the type of paint I used just would not bond with the cheap plastic.

Maybe with the right primer and paint it might hold up, but I'm not so sure.

I'm glad you asked about the guns and their pegs. I didn't even take them out of the box yet.

I'll post picts later. To answer your question about peg size, well they don't have pegs any more, they took the guns and knives and made them really FLAT! So the pegs are more like flats now, and they are larger than the standard size. I tried to put one in a Seeker jet's hand and it's not even close. They do sit fine in the Reflector bots hands, that plastic lets it flex a bit and fits snug. Looking at them from the size they look good, but straight on not so hot.

Also one other minor draw back, the camera eye piece on the real PE will lock together and then fit over Viewfinders robot head to form the camera, on the KO they just have to fit the one tab on each side to lock in place. As pads, they fit on the shoulders ok but don't lock in place like the PE.

I'm going to try some more pictures later this week. One shot I want to try is to mix and match more parts to show what most of the variations would look like.

Last night I swapped legs and heads, so now Viewfinder is just green and purple, I think I like this version the best. There are 3 simple screws on the back to take the robots apart, and the heads are just tabbed in place. Purple head, body, forearms and lower legs now, with green upper legs and arms.

Stay tuned.

On my lunch break yesterday, I took the available pitcs of the KO PE, cut out all the parts and then pieced each color version together in what ever I thought looked best. This does not reflect every possible variation, but I think it does show some desirable versions. Also compares the original at the top, with a shrunk down to actual sized bot on the left.

The original PER got the colors right. Second shot shows the animated version of the original Reflector next to a digibashed customized version and 2 of the closest non paint ap versions.

Enjoy!

I added a little detail that I can''t stop looking at. Got a piece of mirror and cut it to size inside the lense for the camera. I'll post picts later, but I think it looks SOOOOOO much better this way!

Better than a sticker or silver paint. Perhaps I will make more.

I just posted 2 new picts of my final set. I bought a second set and combined parts to make this purple and green version of the PE reflector. I rather like it this way, it doesn't sit on my shelf and look weird any more with those odd colors on a standard set.

Note the mirrored lense cap I added, I think it's better than painting and looks good on display.

From what you just showed, has helped me to decide to not get the PE Reflector

Not to get the Real PE so you can get the KO? Or none of the above? I like this mold better than the one coming out.

There is a thread of the Reprolabels message board asking them to do a label set for the KO toy. Would be nice to have, and would add to how nice it looks. Maybe it should have G2 Decepticon symbols on it?

The day glow green ish colors do make it look like a G2 doesn't it.

I'd make some stickers my self if my printer were working. Though the quality of the stickers Repro usually makes hangs on to the plastic better than mine.

I made custom stickers for the oversized G1 prowl, regular Prowl + a whole police force G1 series, a Red Mustang Alternators pace car custom I made from photos of the actual car, those came out awesome.

At any rate, I'll wait and see what Repro does, about the only thing I could add right now would be "Reflector" stickers over the eye piece thing, and I don't think it really needs it.

Have to see if they made stickers for the real toy, again might not even need it.
