Why do you like G1?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, what he said. :tfgrin I think we're supposed to understand that the released sparks entered the bodies of the Vehicon drones, which would have been reformatted along with everything else on the planet.

Anyway, the techno-organic thing was just the logical conclusion of what had been happening in the Transformers up until that point. There has always been a balance between the organic and the inorganic. Consider the fact that the Autobots (for good or ill) had always needed assistance from organic life forms in order to accomplish their goals. It was Spike and the Nebulans, for instance, who saved the Autobots and restored Cybertron in "Rebirth". And in Beast Wars, we saw an early version of the philosophy that would later drive Beast Machines, as the Maximals learned to strike a balance between their new double "identity" as both beasts and robots (Cheetor and Tigatron being prime examples). Beast Machines just took this idea a step further.

And FWIW the Eastern religious themes in BM weren't the decision of the writers but of Hasbro. They drove the idea of a "spiritual" Transformers show.

Personally, I always felt it to be a strange sort of serendipity that these two "weapons" with opposing functions (the Key to Vector Sigma and the Plasma-Energy Chamber) had been unwittingly written into G1. I think the BM writers did a fantastic job of weaving diverse plot threads together to lead to the ultimate conclusion where you were given this "aha!" moment. It was very well-thought-out.

Oh right, this is supposed to be a "I like G1" thread. :redface Uh... I like the fact that David Wise came up with Vector Sigma and the Plasma-Energy Chamber. :tflaugh Seriously though, he was probably my favorite G1 writer. Great dialogue in "The Key to Vector Sigma"...

I like that toys could be sitting around my room as a kid in alt mode and non-transformer fan friends of mine would just think they were toy cars and trucks and stuff. Sure the new toys have alt modes that are disguises in thier own universe, but in G1 the toys were in disguise in OUR universe... If Hasbro ever makes another line like that, I'll fall in love with it. Oh wait, they did. Alternators.

TOYS: I like the G2 toys since, being born in '86, I got into Transformers with G2.

Later I bought G1 toys when I found out about their existence.

I took a look at the early BW toys but quickly lost interest as a lot of them were ugly, over-elaborate animals looking like nothing :tdown When RID came out I was glad they were back to vehicles and I bought a few RID and then

Armada toys. Neither RID/Armada nor G2 have the classy look of the G1 toys

(especially the Diaclone ones) in my opinion though, and I never really cared about poseability. Take Onslaught and Silverbolt (two of my fav G1 toys): they're not the most poseable toys but look good in both modes, robot & vehicle.

CARTOONS: I like the Sunbow series, the other TF shows never appealed to me. This cartoon had a few weak plots and poorly animated episodes, but there was always some funny lines in every episode and it had good characters & voice acting. It was written in the same way as any american toy commercial of the 80's, and I like this writing style. Plus, there was enough evolutions to keep the story interesting, when some other cartoons had independant stories exclusively. The japanese shows had better animation but didn't have the spirit of the original cartoon, they were written in a more japanese way, and I'm not sure it suited

the TFs right. There's a lot of anime series I like but they have nothing to do with the likes of TF. Who needs a complex story for a toy commercial ? G1 cartoon's story is fine by me. As for Beast wars, it bored the pants off me...

So I'm a G1 purist but it's a only a matter of taste, I may have said sometimes that G1 was the best but I'd never say that the rest is all crap or that G1 is the only TF thing that should exist...

I ilke G1 for two reasons. 1 the Dinobots, 2 everything but Whilie

i like everything about G1

Even Five Faces of Darkness? That contemptible Carnage in C Minor?

Headmasters, Targetmasters, Triggermasters, Shellformer Masters?

Pretenders? Micromasters? Actionmasters? Classic Legends that are repackages of Classic Pretenders?

Wildly inconsistent sizes and colors of everyone in the cartoon? Carwash of Doom?

This is the "Why I LIKE G1 thread." If you wanna post comments like that, post them in the "Why I DON'T LIKE G1 thread."

:pfx GIT 'EM! Your right THAD, people be comin in here spammin the joint with negativity, im for bein objective, but stay on topic. G1 is the mothership, if there's mo G1 no other lines woulda exist, read my motto 1 more time...........

Kinda slow on the uptake there aren't you kiddo? Read the rest of the thread. Besides, you're the one tossing out flamebait, that's the penultimate negativity there.

And G1 is NOT what gave us Transformers. You want to be technical, you got to worship at the altar of Diaclone and Microman - without THEM there is no G1 at all.

Or rather, without the Diakron 3 toy line that Takara tried themselves in the USA that Hasbro saw potential in.

I like G1 in that I like what it has to offer. There's a lot to be desired in G1, but the same can be said about the other series in one area or another.

G1 gave us the basic Autobots vs. Decepticons plot - which hasn't gotten too old since - Combiners, Triple Changers, realistic vehicle modes, and a traitorous second-in-command (how many times now have we seen a devious Decepticon general trying to assume leadership?). The G1 cartoon wasn't influenced by the Japanese to the degree the cartoons since RiD have been.

The animation of the G1 toon could be downright pathetic at times, I'll admit. And a lot of the toys were bricks. Even as a kid I got tired of the gesalts being the same old design time after time. Rumaging through a friends collection a few years ago I was reminded of how bad some of the toys were. But it was all ok at the time, because TF's were new to America, and we were just kids.

I liked the "robots in disguise" theme. Armada, Energon, and now Cybertron, aren't taking that approach. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just different.
