I'm wondering what you mean by G1. Do you mean the reissues? If that's what you mean then take a deep breath. They are old toys for collectors. They were originally made back in the mid 80s. They didn't just get designed recently.

For me, I'd say "character." (And I assume from your comments that you're talking about the toys. So I will too.) I dunno, there's just something about the old Diaclone/Microman guys that still appeals to me. Perhaps they're old enough now to be seen as "vintage" toys, not just "old" toys, if that makes sense. But the toys themselves had a lot of personality in them. I love Soundwave and the cassettes and the Autobot cars and the jets.... I don't have any good reason for it, I guess. Perhaps it's just nostalgia.

Personally, I'd be interested to see how many G1 fans there are out there who *didn't* grow up with it. I'd like to know what draws them to it.

nostalgia, pure and simple, i grew up with it so i still enjoy it. are there better figures and shows now? sure, but it still doesnt mean that g1 doesnt hold a special place in my heart

i like everything about G1

Hey, it's a signature part of my childhood and my childhood was relatively good. What can I say.

I love the storyline and characers from G1,but their toys blow ass compared to today's stuff. Want an example? Drop Energon Towline on the floor. Now go drop G1 Ironhide and watch the difference. I am just playing, but G1 had great characters, a great storyline, anda lot of good memories from my youth

The G1 characters, for me at least, will always be THE transformers story line. Beast wars is included in that of course, but i consider G1 the one true mythos with RID, Armada, and Energon just "what ifs". The reason for that is probably because of the movie and comics more than the show, it made them more "real" and gave them alot more depth. More than anything else, even with the new incarnations of Optimus, Megatron, and Starscream, in my head i give them the personalities from thier G1 counter parts because those characters were fleshed out so much more or maybe thier characters just appealed to me more than the new versions. *shrug*

My reason:

I first fell in love with G-1 when I saw the illustration on the back of a G-1 box. The way it depicted the battle had an eerie feel to it, a mystique tha even to this day still captures my heart and won't let go. The toys themselves also had an appeal to me. the way they were made, how precisely the early ones fit together (prime's arms having the cutout in the forearms for the wheel wells; magnificent!), the smell of the real rubber tires, the precision of the stickers; how intricate they looked, the intricate detail of the robots (their faces were done excellently.)

I notice now how "bricky" they are, but maybe that's why I continue to love them: in spite of their brickiness, they have moving parts. ( and can, to some degree, pose!) But I would have to say it's the whole initial concept of when they first came out that still has a hold of me.

To this day, I still set aside my masterpiece Convoy( which I paid $160 for when I preordered it. ) for a while, and break out my original G-1 Optimus Prime.

Obviously there is the whole "nostalgia thing" but there was also a mystique to the original figures. I remember seeing a Thundercracker at one of my friends (his older brother had it) houses before i was even a fan. And he was so evil and scary - i was fascinated immediately.

And back then they seemed to hold a lot of mystery and danger that is no longer part of the series. For me the originals had a style that fits in my head closer to Dungeons and Dragons rather than Pokemon.

One of my big pet peeves now is that all these new series and yet none of them actually look like real cars or jets - what are they desguising themselves from?

most humans will see that dayglo blocky thing with a head sticking out and say - "hey thats a robot in disguise"

but the originals looked like little cars and little jets and a walkman, and um yes a pistol.

Even with their limited posibility they all had pressence. I think that their tech-specs helped a lot! The characters described in those are infinitely more interesting than anything that the G1 cartoon, or modern cartoons have even attempted. And what was suggested in those created a great deal of play senarios much more than the cartoons/comics did then or now
