Past sets and good toys.

Recommended Posts

Hi again folks, small question.

I have been collecting recently but its mostly new stuff so i am wondering what have i missed out on.

Aside from Alternators and alternity stuff which i want to get what other sets have fun good models, what are the highlights.

IE is the Cybertron set good or the armada set and what are the allstar figures in each line.

thanks.

Your going to get differing perspective here, many of which you might find that you dont agree with. That could be bad if you end spending an arm and a leg on Unicron or Primus (or whoever). In my opinion Armada/Energon/Cybertron is 99% crap. I wouldnt bother with it. If you must own something from that era then I guess the Terrorcons and Scrapmetal arent that bad.

As for other things you might have missed, check out a little thing called Beast Wars. There are tons of great figures that pioneered the brand at the time (such as incorporating mass ball joints and animal alternate modes).

-- Armada = 99% Crap --

Worth Getting:

Unicron (unless you plan on getting the updated version)

-- Energon = 90% Crap --

Worth Getting:

The 3 Combiner teams, OP + Wingsaber, Shockblast

-- Cybertron = 95% Crap --

Worth Getting:

OP (maybe with Leobreaker), Metroplex, Soundwave

The bots listed above are my, as you put it, all star figures from those lines. Basically, they are the ones that stick out to me.

But be careful with Cybertron Soundwave. There is an imperfection in his mold (or maybe its misassembled) that wont allow him to fully transform into jet mode. Just dont force the issue and you wont break it.

Let's see....

=Beast Wars=

-Pretty much everything, just watch out on the two combiner teams, they're a tad complex and can be hard to combine (Magnaboss)

=Beast Machines=

-Do not buy ANYTHING from this line, you will be disappointed.

=RID=

-Leader Prime and Magnus are pretty good, and they combine!

=Armada=

-Deluxe Super-con Optimus Prime

-Supreme Unicron

=Energon=

-Nothing, the toyline was horrible.

=Cybertron=

-Leader Prime

-Supreme Primus (hell yeah)

That's pretty much what you've missed ^^"

I personally would not bother collecting old toy lines that are no longer in production. I will occasionally buy or trade for old toys IF the opportunity arises, but I very seldomly actively seek out old toys. The vast majority of the time, I just buy my Transformers from local brick and mortar stores. If you only just recently started collecting Transformers - if I were you - I'd just purely focus on what's out in stores now. Retro-collecting looks REALLY freaking expensive. (o_O)

+1 QFT. It's all pretty subjective.

-- Armada = 99% Crap --

A lot of the Mini-Cons were pretty cool. Carded Optimus Prime was a good toy and Tidal Wave is just fantastic (although I prefer the Japanese colours).

-- Energon = 90% Crap --

Worth Getting:

The 3 Combiner teams, OP + Wingsaber, Shockblast

I think the smaller Optimus Prime is better value than the big "Power Zord" one. Wing Sabre is pretty ordinary -- pretty much an accessory pack of Power Ranger Prime. IMO the best figures in this line were the Basics like Skyblast, Arcee, Strongarm, Battle Ravage etc. Bulkhead is pretty cool (although that superfluous electronic accessory makes him unnecessarily more expensive than he need be - but if you can get a cheaper Bulkhead loose w/o the blue thingamajiggy, then it's a good buy). Quite a lot of nice Mini-Cons... and Takara's Kicker is a pretty cool Microman figure (Hasbro's is an epic fail though). Snowcat's also pretty cool, especially if you're a fan of G.I. Joe. ;)

-- Cybertron = 95% Crap --

Worth Getting:

OP (maybe with Leobreaker), Metroplex, Soundwave

Actually I think Cybertron is the best of the Unicron Trilogy lines with a LOT of really good toys (many of whom were repainted for movieverse). Unlike Armada and Energon, most Cybertron toys' engineering are NOT significantly impaired or compromised by their gimmicks. There are only a few toys in Cybertron I found disappointing, such as the shellformeriffic Thunderblast and the rather underwhelming Back Stop whom I'd never want to shake hands with. :P Optimus Prime is really awesome... Megatron's just okay. Leobreaker's crap... for such a large expensive toy I expected more articulation in robot mode and a more complex transformation scheme. That toy is overwhelmed by its gimmick as transforming into an arm for Optimus Prime... and the arm mode is just unspeakably stupid (it's just a liger attached to Prime's shoulder - fail!). Metroplex; again, too simplistic for such a large and expensive toy. I find a lot of the smaller and cheaper toys to be far more satisfying (e.g. Downshift, Armourhide, Clocker, Ransack etc.). Overhaul/Brushguard are pretty crap though. But overall I thought the line was well done and way better than Armada and Energon.

=Beast Wars=

-Pretty much everything, just watch out on the two combiner teams, they're a tad complex and can be hard to combine (Magnaboss)

I agree with this. Beast Wars is pure win. :)

=Beast Machines=

-Do not buy ANYTHING from this line, you will be disappointed.

The Maximals are pretty shite, but a lot of Vehicons are alright. And the later Battle For The Spark figures were pretty good too. Some of the figures who never appeared in the show were well made, like Night Viper... a pretty clever design considering the ambitious alt mode. ;)

=RID=

-Leader Prime and Magnus are pretty good, and they combine!

Yeah, but their combined mode is unstable, and Magnus doesn't "transform" - you just pull him apart and reassemble him. :/ I find a lot of the other unique moulds pretty good, like the Car Robot Brothers, Team Bullet Train, the Buildmasters -- Gigatron's okay if a bit too ambitious in design.

=Armada=

-Deluxe Super-con Optimus Prime

-Supreme Unicron

Agreed.

=Energon=

-Nothing, the toyline was horrible.

Don't entirely agree. See above. :)

=Cybertron=

-Leader Prime

-Supreme Primus (hell yeah)

Also good choices. :)

What I think were pretty good, aside from Beast Wars where I've listed the ones to avoid like the plague.

Beast Wars = 95% win

Avoid:

Retrax, Injector, Optimus Minor, TM2 Cheetor, the Mutants

Beast MAchines = 65% crap

Worthwhile:

Skydive, Tank Drone, Motorcycle Drone, Ultra Jetstorm if you don't mind the inaccuracy to the CG model, Air Attack Optimus Primal (was released under RiD, but was intended for Beast Machines)

Robots in Disguise = 50% win

This line was mostly repaints of older toys, thus the low rating. (I didn't care for the Spychangers) But most of the new molds were very good.

Worthwhile:

Megatron/Galvatron, Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, Sky-Byte, Dark Scream, Gas Skunk, Slapper, Scourge, Midnight Express, Railspike, Rapid Run

Armada = 97% crap

Worthwhile:

Unicron w/ Dead End, Tidal Wave w/ Ramjet, the Air Assault Mini-Con team

Energon = 55% win

The Autobots each get more fun the more you have, as then you have more Powerlinx options for each, but very, very few are worth getting in the first place. The Decepticons on the other hand were generally okay.

Worthwhile:

Megatron/Galvatron, Starscream, Mirage, Sharkticon, Superion Maximus (Storm Jet, Treadshot, Windrazor, Sky Shadow, Terradive), Constructicon Maximus (Steamhammer, Duststorm, Wideload, Bonecrusher, Sledge)

Cybertron = 85% win

Avoid Backstop and Thundercracker.

Worthwhile:

Sideways, Optimus Prime, Wingsaber, Galvatron (the black and silver one is Galvatron), Cybertron Defense Scattorshot, Primus, Vector Prime

Classics = 100% win

GET EVERYTHING. Mini-Cons and Legends aside, anyway. If you can get the Classics Devastator for cheap, get it instead of Constructicon Maximus.

'07 Movie line = 95% crap

Mostly outdated versions of the characters, but there are still a few gems left.

Worthwhile:

Landmine, Incinerator, Leader Brawl, Dropkick/Salvage, Longarm

Animated = 98% win

Worthwhile:

Lockdown, Voyager Optimus Prime, Leader Megatron, Wreck-Gar, Shockwave, Rodimus, Arcee

Universe = 90% win

Avoid the repainted Voyagers. Galvatron is only worth getting if you want RTS Cyclonus (and you should) and Generations Scourge.

Worthwhile:

Prowl, Bluestreak, Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Hound, Henkei! Dinobot, Henkei! Hot Shot (don't bother otherwise), Cosmos, Warpath, Wheelie, Brawn, Beachcomber, Bruticus Maximus (released under ROTF as well as a Target exclusive)

I guess what most folks are saying is true because frankly i had some Beast Wars (Transmetal Terrasaur,Tarantulas) The big crab thingy, quickstrike and inferno and I was no impressed.

I felt the toys were just bad looking animals with even worse looking robot modes.

for instance I was looking at some old toys and Crosswise,Downshift and Cannonball appeal to me including Sideways from the cybertron line.

Maybe i am just weird but why do people thing X or Y lines are bad then?

(I do need to get that movie leader Brawl I love a good tank mode)

Because its all subjective to your opinion. Not everyone is going to like the same thing. Im with the majority though, Beast Wars is awesome and A/E/C is garbage. But again thats subjective to my opinion.

And most people are saying whats true, Beast Wars IS impressive. Remember that those toys came out in the 90's. They are the harbinger of the articulation and attention to toon models we have today. You must thank BW for this.

Get Generations Darkmount of Skullgrin if you want a really good tank btw.
