Repaints; too many, not enough, just right?

Recommended Posts

On a related note, I remember seeing a bunch of Universe repaints lying on a KB some weeks ago. All of figures I dislike... to my dismay! :tfsad

See, this is what I'm talking about. Hasbro takes some of the crappiest molds in RiD/BW/BM/Armada and paints them. I would've taken 5 repainted Hoist/Ransack over the Swerve repaint of Blurr. While I will admit the later molds--NS Cheetor, Longhorn, Frostbite, Stockade & Magna Stampede and Whirl especially--are awesome, the damage was done with early bad repaints. Depth Charge could've been a LOT better, Tankor & Obsidian weren't really that special and what the heck was Reptilion doing in that line? I wished they used more of the obscure/"favorite" molds from RiD and the beast lines.

Repaints are cool with me as long as they are painted "the right way" . An horrible example of a repaint gone wrong is the Transformers Universe Silverbolt, in which has no silver on it at all and should have been called "Purplebolt". However, a great example of a beautifully well done repaint is the Japanese BW repaint of "Jetstorm" ("Tontobot" or "Tontoboto" as it is known as.).

Repaints do get annoying at times if alot of them are for sale in a short period of time after the original's release (Transformers: Energon and Transformers: Armada series are a good example of that particular occurance.).

I don't really care for repaints :tdown , but they will never go away because its cheaper to produce them than to create an original piece(I didn't read any of the posts so if someone already said this: sorry). In some cases they just pick the wrong ones(and didn't the repainted Bruticus(Ruination) appear in like the last three lines?) and piss you off. For example: MP-02 is gonna be mine for $20 at Wally World in a few months :tfevil :tfevil :tfevil

I can understand the need for Hasbro to do repaints. What I can't understand is thinking behind some of the figures they do repaint, how they repaint them, and how many different versions of it they make.

Case in point, Armada Sideswipe. Quite possibly the Wheelie of our generation, despised by a great deal of Transformers junkies everywhere. So what do they do? repaint him not once, not twice, but three times. :wtf It doesn't matter how much polish you put on a turd, it's still a turd!

If they must do repaints, do them ONCE! Then, a few years later, if the need comes up then come out with another. But only do figures that the fans would like to see again, not whatever is convienient at the time.

Another thing that doesn't help is when a repaint looks like it was done by a color blind monkey. If a repaint can look just as good if not better than the original then there wouldn't be nearly as many people who complain about them. E-Quickstrike is a perfect example of a totally kickass repaint. If they could all be that good, I would never say a bad thing about them.

Then there is the timing of repaints. In Energon, in a lot of places the repaints actually showed up on shelves before the originals did (if they did at all). I never saw a Mirage in any store when Dreadwing showed up and Beachcomber showed up barely after Cliffjumper did. Repaints would work so much better if there was more time in between the originals release and the time of the repaints release. And again, if the repaint is BETTER than the original then they will be appreciated a lot more.

Last but not least, it wouldn't hurt to add a few changes to a repainted figure. Some slight retooling, a different weapon, basically anything that would set it apart a bit more from the original figure. That way it would be more worthwhile for collectors to go out and get it. Granted they do it sometimes, (with mixed results) but not all the time.

Bad Repaints are the ones that are rushed out, as mentioned.. some good ones that I own though, being I have some of these..

Armada Airrazor- I don't care if she's listed as an Autobot, that dark color screams decepticon to me. I really like it in contrast of Transmetal Airrazor.

Universe Razorclaw - Same concept. Tigerhawk's evil twisted twin.

Universe Skywarp - Arguably, one of the best repaints in Universe they've dished out IMHO. I still wanna see Screamer and Cracker using that mold.

Cryotek - I'm still trying to track this guy down.. but it's a great repaint of the TM2 Dragon Megs.

Granted, almost all of the alt repaints are just as good as the original, if not better.. like as much as I Starscream about Dead End's head, I preffer him to Sideswipe.

And the E-Hobby repaints are generally pretty sweet.. not that I have any though.. yet anyway.

It depends on the figure for me. I love the repaint/new face mold of Armada Hotshot.

Look at MP-02 though, you need to be on some serious drugs to think that a white Prime looks like a blue and red Ultra Magnus! I don't even know what the Sideswipe you're talking about looks like but it can't be this ridiculous, can it?
