Proper Magnets for Animated Ratchet

Recommended Posts

This is an instructional as to how to make Animated Ratchet's dual magnets

First, pic the tools you want to demolish (I'd highly recomend that one of the two is the wrench since out of all four, it's the one with the least material to cut through).

Cut it at the base (I put in a whole wrench and the cut one for comparison)

I should have taken pictures, but it's not that hard since you're going to be disarming Ratchet for these pieces anways. Just grab your screwdriver and unscrew him at the shoulder so you can get the lower arm out (it's easier to work with just that than the whole body). Next, unscrew his lower arm (no need to bother with the elbow). Pull (if his arm breaks, it's not the end of the world, you just need to wiggle out the important piece once the rod has some clearance to allow it to do so).

Cut it so that it's just above the hinge part of the piece so that you look like this in the end.

File both sections a bit so that they're flat for gluing purposes. Use any gluing method prefferred (rubber cement, super glue, model glue, whatever). Let it dry.

CAUTION: You want to make sure that when assembling that you have it lined up right so that you will enable it to turn in the end product.

Paint if desired and you should wind up with this

(sorry, bad pun)

nice upgrade. Wasn't too happy with that figure from the box, enough to give it to my daughter who actually loves it.

THIS IS AWESOME!

I've wondered about doing something like this, but never got past the "It'd be nice if..." stage.

My only problem now is Ratchet is nolonger shelfwarming around here. :(

I actually think the "magnet shaped" magnets are a tad silly in the show, so I prefer my ratchet as is and just pretend his flip out magnets are different tools, but that is a real creative fix for those that want more show accuracy. :thumb

I think pics would help. Does this mean you have to buy an extra Ratchet (or at least his magnets)? Because its not stated as such if so. REALLY COOL design scheme though and im interested in a step by step thats clearer then this if possible. I think i understand but the whole "if his arm breaks" thing kinda threw me for a :wtf

Probably so, since you would need 2 wrenches (I think) to complete the process. I could be wrong though.

The "arm breaking thing" was cause you have to pull to give the pin clearance so you can slide out the magnet. Makes it easier than actually cutting it off, otherwise you wind up shortening it some and thus providing you with less material to connect to the hinge piece.

As for needing another Ratchet, yes.

Here's a step by step.

Pics might come tomorrow depending on my schedule.

1: Go out and get another Ratchet

2: Open him and select two tools that will provide the hinge joints (if you feel that they're too loose with the exception of the wrench, buy a third so that he has his whole tool set if you choose, or just butcher both wrenches). I insist on the wrench due to the lack of material to cut through at the base.

3. Cut them at the base providing the hinge

4. On the backs of Ratchet's shoulders are three screws. You don't have to undo them all the way (in case you wish to save his body for another bash), but just enough so that you can take out his lower arms.

5. There are two screws on Ratchet's lower arms. Don't bother with the elbow ones (as I found out cause it's a pain in the ass to try and get it back together). Focus on the ones actually on the forearms. Unscrew it and just wiggle till the pin and magnet have clearance, and this allows you to slide out the magnet. Do what you want with the spring.

6. I can't get pictures for this step since I took a lot of pictures after the fact. Anyways, cut just above the hole the pin went through. This provides you with enough material to sufficiently adhere the magnet to the hinge from the tool.

7. If the cuts aren't even, grab a file and file it. Not too much, especially on the magnet (again due to the amount of connecting material)

8. Use whatever method you choose to connect. Rubber cement, super glue, model glue, whatever. Just make sure that when you're doing it, the hinge and magnet are correctly positioned, otherwise you'll end up with magnet halves that go in the opposite direction.

9. After you do that and let them sit, if you choose to paint it, go ahead, but it's not required. If you do so, let the paint sit and you're done. If not, you're done.

Attach to Ratchet whenever you desire.
