I think it's a good idea to bring Furman on board as a consultant. As a writer, he has the most experience with the TFs.

Furman KNOWS the TF universe. Say what you will about his writing skills, the fact is that he's responsible for a lot of what we accept as "canon" today.

I think Furman has done an excellent job of establishing a more-or-less consistent backstory for the Transformers. This is where his consultancy will pay off, keeping the new movie consistent with the accepted "canon" that LordM mentions.
