Popular Transformers died too easily?

Recommended Posts

Is it me or did the Popular G1 characters from the first and second season in the Transformers movie die way too easily? :tfsad

I don`t know but it seems funny that all through season 1&2 Megatron was blasting the Autobots along with Starscream and some others all over the place and all that would happen is the Autobots were maybe stunned a little and needed some repairs, but in the movie they would get completely wasted by one or two blasts. During Heavy Metal War when Megatron is kickin the crap out of Optimus prime all over the place, 10 min later Prime is ok. Or how about in part three of "More than meets the eye", Optimus falls from about 10,000-20,000 feet after being blasted by a canon while chasing the Nemesis, lands and rolls out of it just to get up and go I`m fine. But in the movie Optimus dies from getting hit in the left side 3 or 4 times. :wtf What gives? Oh well, just wondering.

The "out with the old / in with the new" formula is a time-honored method for bringing in fresh new characters to take the place of old ones in a dramatic way.

Notice television shows where main characters only die on the season finale. (Dax on ST:DS9, multiple characters over multiple seasons of Law & Order.)

The same method is used in comics. Uncanny X-Men #291 or so saw the organization of the Blue and Gold X teams. And with new teams and new villians, long-time characters the White Queen and the Hellions got sent to the "ol' X-Mansion in the sky". (But of course, in comics, nobody stays dead long.) And who can forget Giant Size X-Men #1? The original team gets kidnapped and (who could believe it) Professor X assembles a whole new team, including Wolverine, Storm, and Nightcrawler.

Of course TF: The Movie saw a lot of characters die at the drop of the hat. It's a good (and mostly final) way to ship old characters out and bring new ones in and move the story along.

Short answer:

New popular toys must be made. So kill off the older characters (or rebuild them into diff bodies.) and boom, new money makers.

I don't think the real problem was the characters' deaths in the movie - the problem was their survival in the series! Really, I think the damage inflicted in the movie is far more believable. Given the supposedly devastating power TFs yield, and how frequent and longstanding their war is, it's amazing anyone survives more than a few cycles.

I agree. Someone had suggested earlier in a thread like this that the Decepticons were never at full power while they were on Earth (Seasons 1 & 2). Hence their weapons were not as deadly as they could have been. They had plenty of energon by the time 2005 rolled around. Thus when they attacked the shuttle and Autobot City they were operating at full power. Thus their weaponry was deadly.

I will let you determine the "hokey-ness" of that explanation. It's a supposedly clever way to explain away the fact that a Saturday-morning American cartoon in the 1980's can only be [/i]so violent. Of course a PG motion picture can up the violence a notch or two.

Soon we'll be seeing "explanations" of why the animation was better in the movie as opposed to the series, and other such silly things.

Also, add to that the possibility that the Autobots from the Moonbases were also not up to their full power so any shielding, armor and weapons were weakened and therefore stood no chance against Megatron and the Decepticons.

Um, have you any sense of imagination or creativity? I think it's a very interesting idea. Also another reason that the S1 & S2 'bots died so easily was because there was no one around to fix them-Ratchet bites it on the shuttle, Wheeljack dies, and Hoist and First Aid were nowhere to be seen. Which kind of goes into another point: Prime probably died because the only one left to treat him was Perceptor, who was more of a scientist than a medic. The damage was too extensive for his expertise, and therefore fatal.

As far as animation goes. It was a movie. Of course it was better. :tftongue

True. In FFOD #2 Rodimus & Grimlock were blasting weak Decepticons with no effect :wtf They should have been scrap!

Remember in "War Dawn"? The early "Primes" were passing the Matrix around like a football. Here your the new Prime...Blam! Now you're the new Prime...Blam! :tflaugh

seriously, Diesel's explanation actually makes sense. There's nothing hokey about it. And Shockwave2005 is right, it's a movie so of course the animation's gonna be better. The animation in "Rebirth" was also better than most of the eps.
