Custom G1 Headmaster Minerva

Recommended Posts

Here's my second attempt at a repaint project. I converted a G1 Headmaster Nightbeat into my own G1 Custom Minerva.

Here's the original bot:

Here's it primed:

Here's the roughly finished product. Still needs stickers and alittle more touch-up and i had to handpaint the croosses and the red racing stripes:

At first i want to say "yuck!" but my second repaint was much, much worse. this is pretty awesome for a second one i guess. Paint just looks too thick, what did you use?

I used a primer that was too thick and think I over-coated it! And the primer and the white glossy paint didn't like each other! Not a very good painter I guess!

You always have to start some where. And you learn with each one. Just keep trying at that, you'll start picking up some stuff.

i tend to prefer a spray on primer, but have also had a lot of luck with krylon fusion matte white or grey

also you probably want to consider taking the piece apart and painting the parts separately. it tends to ensure a more consistent coat

Yeah, taking apart the figure usually helps alot,i'm sure the joints are tight and funky right now, right? and the paint chips off when transforming it,i had the same problem with an Ironhide kitbash i did once, not to mention the Armada minicon swindle (or was it mirage,i know it was an F1 car.) which i had to throw away. But then again,i shouldn't have used Humbrol-Enamel,it is epic :fail . what kind of paint did you use? (also,i heard primer isn't necessary at all with transformers, but i'm not sure about that last part)

I still like to primer because paint doesnt stick to paint well, so if you are going to paint over hasbro paint apps, without primer you have an instant point of failure. I have tried to sand off paint apps and alcohol them off. the former works pretty well but is a lot of work (skuffing the plastic will make paint stick to it easier, you also could thin the plastic out :redface ) the latter doesnt work as well because the surface still ended up too slick to take normal paint

a paint like krylon fusion is supposed to mitigate the need for primer, but I am an old dog and cant perfect new tricks (and there arent a ton of colors in that line)

Hey for a 2nd try, that isn't too bad! The colors are bright, and the paint apps are in the right places...

I've found that an endless supply of clear tape is a must for masking off all those pesky areas like windows and mirrors...you can also use it for stripes, and for separating colors for that "two tone" look. If you go to the sporting goods department of just about any major retail chain, you should be able to find a relatively inexpensive plastic box that is designed for holding 6-12 fishing lures...like this sort of- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s...011000_100-11-9 A couple of boxes like that makes it ALOT easier to separate your parts and screws while you are working on the project. Taking your TF apart seems like a sin at first, but it makes the painting much easier, and you will be more satisfied with the results.

Wal-Mart is where I like to go to buy my acrylic paints and brushes...they're inexpensive, and come in an endless assortment of colors.

I recently needed some orange spray, so I took a G1 Grapple with me to the hobbyshop so I could try and match up the colors...this is a good idea...although I had to fight a couple of nerds off that wanted to manhandle my Grapple.

For me, wether I'm doing up a custom TF, or building a model airplane, it's hard for me to take my time and go slow because I want the finished product right away! I am a firm believer in instant gratification, but the finished result when you deliberately take your time with a project will always be better than if you rush thru it.

We should be able to take your customs and line them up and be able to see your evolution as an artist!

Looking foward to your next idea!
