IMO, Leader class PHAILS

Recommended Posts

yeah, not to mention they are IN SCALE with the deluxe bots of the line.

Cybertron Megatron fails because he can't even be in scale with himself.

:lol

happily he was part of my collection downsizing

They came before "leader class" existed, but RiD Prime and Ultra Magnus are awesomeness. Couldn't imagine them not being that size.

:word

Some of the absolute best figures to come out in the last decade.

Normally I would throw out the old "quality over quantity" argument like I do for Alts and MP's, but a lot of Leader figs just aren't that great. RiD Prime, Magnus, movie Prime, and Cybertron Prime are the only really good ones I can think of. The rest (A-Megs, E-Megs, A-Prime, E-Prime, C-Metroplex, Movie Megs) have sucked nuts, and some of the Supremes (Cheetor, Starscream) are even worse.

Sertile, there was nothing wrong with most of those, and there is no leader class a-megs.

I agree that E-Megs was crap, but the smaller TRU 2-pack version (also Japanese version) was really nice

Armada Prime was craptastic, but with Jetfire and Overload it turned into kind of a fun toy (I am a little partial towards combiners though)

Movie Megs is a bad example, because that almost implies that there was a good version out there somewhere

Cybertron Metroplex was junk from the beginning, what the hell does it turn into, and on that note Cybertron Menasor...WTF!

Never grabbed the Energon Prime, but have been tempted to grab him and a Wingsaber, again for combined mode only though

What is Armada Megatron then? Ultra? Oh wait, no, I got the answer : a piece of crap.

I liked Energon Megatron, when he was 2/3 as tall. Although he could have been a deluxe and it wouldn't have affected him adversely.

I really wanted to like him, especially after the TF Armada video game...

I could not

Leader Class Transformers aside the most expensive TF I've bought to date is probably MP Prime. Seeing it in person on a shelf at TFU won me over opposed to everything I had seen Internet based initially.

Going through my collection I like Rid Prime/Magnes for what they are but really hate the construction/plastic quality on them as well as most of the Rid bots. I'm also not a fan of piece formers.

Armada Prime is more or less a voyager class toy with an oversized trailer that turns into a flimsy pair of pants. As much as I hate the gimmick/execution of this toy it's aesthetically impressive when in Superpants mode with Overload bearing most of the toys fire power. It's for this reason alone I've probably kept Armada Prime this long. Sadly though Jetfire pants mode is fail on every level.

Armada Megatron was one of the last Armada bots I bought. Personally I really liked this Ultra class variation of the character. The only thing that really detracted from the toy was non ratcheted hips. All Megatron can really do is stand in one pose, and if the knees are bent to the side it looks like he's squatting which isn't a very cool pose for the leader of the decepticons to be in. Tank mode is probably his best attribute. Turret missile, and two side missiles make this a winner for me.

Energon Prime. I was pretty much determined to like this one to prove all the haterz wrong. Especially at the time it was released. aesthetically the design/concept never bothered me much. Truck mode was cool, and the geometrically challenged trailer was an interesting twist on a tired design. My problem more so than anything was how lose everything was constructed. Most of the E bots had fairly tight/ratcheted joints where as Prime was almost immediately lose out of the package. Poor construction IMO detracted a lot from this toys over potential. Especially after I finally scored a Wingsaber from another member, (I swear, it never came to Canada) and found Primes poorly ratcheted legs/knees couldn't support the added weight of having Wingsaber in either mode attached. The multi colored appendages however never had a problem because they were a lot lighter, and a lot smaller. The point of getting Wingsaber was not to have a Megazord flavoured Transformer on the shelf.

Energon Megatron was definitely an Ultra/Leader class Transformer. Personally I didn't see the need for Hasbro to make this one as big as they did but whatever it's an impressive piece in both modes, and great homage to G1's Galvatron. I pretty much love everything Hasbro did with this thing. The alt mode is an impressive scale, features an actual rolling landing gear, and the colors are a good fit. Transformation isn't anything spectacular but then I'm not a huge fan of complex transformations. Articulation as with most of the E bots is fairly good. What really impressed me was the first time use of ratcheted hips, and articulated knees as well as arms/elbows. The only thing I can think of that would have made this one even more awesome would have been a rotating waist. That and a hand held sword over the stupid tank sword that attaches to his arm.

Cybertron Prime AKA Gundum Prime. Hasbro IMO did everything right with this one. aesthetically pleasing/impressive in both modes, neat simple transformation scheme, full range of arm/leg articulation and plenty of well incorporated gimmicks. As much as I like this one I never actually was able to warm up to it much. I think what bothered me was the overall clunky feel of having to again piece his super mode together from a handful of detachable pieces. That and for the first time since collecting I realized I was a grown adult trying to enjoy something that would barely appease a ten year old. Reality Sux. :tdown FWIW C Prime still makes an outstanding addition to any collection and makes for one impressively badass display piece with the underarm guns in place. (Wingsaber attachment not so much) That said I'd have to honestly say Cybertron Prime probably has the best super mode out of any past incarnation. Simply put Big F*cking Guns FTW.

Cybertron Megatron. Closest thing to a Transforming Batmobile most of us are ever to have in any collection. The third mode, a supposed Jet is clearly an after though in hopes of giving the toy a little more bang for the buck but again fails on all levels. This bot is cool enough as either a car/badass Decepticon Leader. The bot mode is pure win, and has probably the best articulation anny Megatron figure has ever had. Outside MP that is. Full range of arms, legs, and this time around rotating wrists and waist make for one kickass toy. The mold is made even better by the second release. I have both but if it came down to getting rid of one purple/orange/teal Megatron would be the one to go. The Galvatron repaint with it's G1 inspired silver/black/red scheme make this one impressive display piece and fits in wonderfully with most if not all the Cybertron Decepticons.

Leader Class movie Prime. Proportions may be a bit off but that for the most part is because this one does not photograph well in any given circumstance. To appreciate this one you basically have to see it in person or buy it. Alt mode is probably the closest of any of the movie Primes. Silver paint for the chromed parts would have been welcome but as is it isn't half bad. The painting/detailing with the flames is really nicely accomplished and the use of rubber wheels for the first time since MP Prime made this a must own. Transformation is a lot more involving than any incarnation during A/E/C but not as overly frustrating or convoluted as MP Prime so I didn't mind it as much. Bot mode of this Prime is a Masterpiece in itself. Lots of nice articulation, sturdy build, and well proportioned (in person) The voyager may be a lot closer in representing the overall design but for what you pay it's a pale comparison in terms of quality, design and construction. I know I'll probably be black balled for this but Classics Prime IMO was a much better figure all around.

Leader Class Megatron/Brawl Can't comment, don't as yet own either. :tdown

Teh future. LC had a good run but after trailerless Classics Prime I'm fine with future incarnations being both Voyager and trailerless. Smaller/less expensive, and look to be just as good if not better than the LC incarnations. The removal of Prime's trailer is also welcome. Prime as Classics/Movie/Animated have already proved can survive just fine without a trailer add on, and will hopefully continue to do so in most if not all future incarnations.

Anyone recall when I predicted this as a possible trend change shortly after Classics Prime was revealed? ;)
