Will animated's writing ever be as good as bw

Recommended Posts

ok, let's talk writing. I honestly don't think a toon's writing will ever make or break the show. I have the entire G1 on dvd & watch them from time to time.

when I do I'm forced to admit that altho the premis is sound (you know the whole constant search for energy thing), the plots were extreamly redundant. every eps it was the same damn thing. when I think about it G1 realy ony had a few good well writen eps like: the pilot, insecticons, construticons, creation of the airalbots & stunticons, the female autobots, the creation of the space bridge, & oh yeah, when Megs brought Cybertron into Earth's orbit. IMO Starscream & Dr. Archoville were the real stars of that tril-eps.

but mostly all the rest of the eps are just the "same script differant cast". So even tho G1's writing was by no means out of the ordinary, it still some how became this "Mecca" that brings us all to forums like this one to rant on & on about toon's that are well past their prime & compair them to the new young "wipper snapper" toons of today.

so argue all you want about the writing. hell even send in a few scripts if you dane to do so. but unless your animation is on point all the writing in the world won't save this doomed lil toon.

that's why I said what I said in the animated tread. todays animation just doesn't have the "staying power" of the toons of "yester-year".

This is a thread about the writing on Beast Wars and Animated - a subject I have been thinking about a lot and one I would like to engage my fellow fans in discussion about. If you don't want to talk about the writing in Beast Wars and Animated, please start a new thread or continue discussion in a thread dealing with the things you do want to talk about (like the writing in G1 or the animation quality in any of the shows) instead of derailing this thread, please.

QFT. In case it wasn't obvious, that was my point in my last post.

I'm I not speaking the King's or Queen's English? was not my post in referance to the WRITING of TF:A. Of corse it was. your just mad because I have every intention of voicing my opinion. so I guess you & all the other "deadly dull" people of "deadly dullsville" had better get cracking on that life time ban pittion. in other words just do to me what you preach about being wrong & terrible over in the political boards. just censor me if your not man (or woman) enough to practice what you preach about freedom.

I always look for good strong characterisation whether it be in TV shows, books, movies etc … Animated is heading in the right direction. What I like about Animated is that the writers are concentrating on a very small pool of characters – which will hopefully lead to greater development, recognised relationships and viewer empathy. I always thought that, animation aside, Armada started off well, but as the character list swelled the characterisation became diluted. This shouldn’t happen with Animated, but then again it is primarily there to sell lots of different toys to kids.

In comparison to the first five BW episodes, it’s BW all the way for me. I seem to be in the minority but some of the early BW episodes are my favourites – ‘the Web’, ‘Equal Measures’ and ‘Chain of Command’ are classics, how great were Tarantulas and Rattrap in ‘the Web’?

After enjoying ‘Transform and Roll Out’, episodes 4 and 5 left me feeling under-whelmed. I was looking forward to some Autobot v Con action (which didn’t happen) and the ‘Angry Archer’ was a waste of time (hope this doesn’t signal a trend for Teen Titans style super-villains?), also why did the introduction of the Dinos have them fighting the Autobots and being unintelligent, occasionally doffing the cap to G1’ers is fine but copying the blueprint of the G1 cartoon is dull - G1 is done, it was great 20 years ago but its now time to think outside the box.

The series needs to establish the story and have a recognised cast of good and bad guys/gals, this should then give the foundation for some interesting and entertaining stories. For me personally though, Animated is really going to have to pull out the stops to reach the heights of Beast Wars.

No. Reread your own post. All you talk about is G1's writing and animation. You don't say anything about Animated or Beast Wars. If you'd been on topic, why the Powerglide would I have said anything to the contrary? It's not about censorship, dammit, it's about contributing to the discussion at hand.

I think people are mixing up the concepts of animation with design. The animation is great, very fluid and not just mouths moving on motionless bodies. You might not like how the characters look, but you can't say that they don't move.

for me it's the other way round on this, i think that episode 4 gave some great characterisation to Prowl. Plus i thought the Dinobot's introduction was original, in no series have they been brought to life by accident then fed false information by Megatron as soon as they became self aware.

You disappoint me. I was hoping that you would be mature enough to get past your little...whatever issue it is that you have. But sadly I see now that you're just a troll.

Take another week off. Next time it's for good.

The story arc dictated the Dino’s birth, a G1 cartoon style birth would have been too random, it was pretty lazy and random in its original incarnation. The superior G1 comics birth - being created by the Ark to protect against the recently arrived on Earth Shockwave - wouldn’t work in Animated because the story arc is totally different.

My critisim is with the Dino’s characters, big powerful dumb TFs who like to fight (other than when they are in a peaceful environment), this has been done in the G1 cartoon - I just want to see something different.

See, I'm really enjoying the subtlety of Megatron's "attacks". We knew there'd be characters like the Angry Archer early on, and while I was all for the Autobots fighting crime in general, I was pleasantly surprised at how AA was not the focus of his episode, and how the series has made the true threat in each episode a Decepticon, whether the Autobots know it or not. It really gives the series a chance to allow the Autobots to find their footing and mature as soldiers. It creates a tension that Beast Wars didn't have, since the Maximals were aware of the Predacon threat from day one and matured as soldiers very quickly, Animated has found a way to essentially give the Autobots the same "arc" but in a different way.

I can see where that might not be everyone's cup of tea, but you have to respect the skill it takes to lay out the same story foundation in such a different way.
