Ya my decision to go back to only collecting G1 is going to be short lived once again.

Looks a lot like Macross valks in the fighter mode but that face is going to take some getting use to. Joker? :P

1-Because that's how he is in the show...

2-Because Starscream doesn't always have to have his G1 deco...

3-Because kids (target audience) don't know who Thundercracker is anyway...

Actually, I'm going to say that you maybe have a repainted Starscream that was meant to serve as "Thundercracker" as fuller.

I base this on these screencaps:

 

 

These all show a more traditionally coloured Starscream. So I'm sticking by my guns that we're looking at hear is the Animated Starscream mold used to make a Thundercracker for the Animated line.
