Flawed Characters?

Recommended Posts

Soundwave: This is one of the most notorious Decepticons in TF history. I believe he is liked by all fans but why? He had no actual personality. Never laughed, never schemed, never did anything but follow orders. In fact, the only sign of life he ever displayed was ambition in the movie when he wanted to assume leadership after Megatron was tossed. He was unique cause he "carried" a platoon which were used for airial assault, recon, devestation, and infantry purposes. He was a cold killing machine built for destruction, no touchy-feely stuff. A spy himself and a very capable warrior. There has never been another character like him since G1 and that is unfortunate. Soundwave came across as a "creepy" guy because of his lack of personality, hell his voice even backed that feeling up, so how is this bad? If you disagree with my take on this character, write how you see him, or another character. If you want to post what made a character suck, post that too. I like to see how others view things (No Wheelie, to easy)

If you ask me Tidal Wave is just a Bigger version of this guy, not bashing you but their just alike.

I've heard Soundwave laugh before. I think more than once. But I know definately on the episode where Starscream and Soundwave were hypnotising people at a club. Later Tracks and Blaster arrive and Soundwave and Blaster fight for the first time. Soundwave is goes "All talk........no shock!" Then later he knocks Blaster on his ass and proceeds to laugh at him.

Ahh Blaster, my fav he was the exact opposite of soundwave. he was kind of stereotypical though when I saw him and heard him speak in radio lingo, I always imagined some guy with a jheri curl, parachute pants and a big boombox on his shoulder

Optimus Prime. The name alone stands for courage, fairness and warrior. Prime always sought peace, fairness and justice when the time called for it. like one person posted who among us hasnt wanted to be like Prime at least once in our lives? I am alot like Prime in alot of ways thats why I have identified with his charachter for so many years. I stand for the very same values he stands for and like Prime there have been times where thats went against me but I've always whethered the storm like he has.

Actually, I think the best character-development I saw in any show from the 80's was Ghostbusters. I've gone back and read the episode synopsis' and I can't believe how well-rounded that show was, for even today's standards.

you brought up a point that i was going to make. pretty much every show and series in the 80s had NOTHING to do with character development. everything back then was 'your problem will be solved in 30 minutes...minus 7 minutes for commercial breaks'. that didn't just apply to cartoons, it was for everything. look at all the sitcoms that were around. look at Diff'rent Strokes. did you really know what kind of person Mr. Drummand was? to us, he was just a nice, old man. but, you didn't really know anything ABOUT him. everything in the 80s was all about living for the moment...action-action-action. nothing about plot or character development. that's the reason for these so-called "reality shows". so you can find out the ins and outs of all the different people involved in the show.

bodycount, while i do love your ATHF avatar, i can't understand WHY you're so against G1. sure, the animation was crude and the toys are primitive compared to today's standards. but, G1 started it all. without it, there would be no Armada, Energon, BinalTech, Beastwars...etc...

i dunno, being that i'm 27, of course i have an affinity for G1. i was 7 years old when my grandparents bought me my G1 Hound. i was hooked at the idea of robots that can turn into everyday vehicles, planes, radios and whatnot. now, 20 years later, i'm still in Toys R Us 3 days a week! hahahaha :thumb

He hates G1 becuse of fan boys

I may have made this thread sound like it was meant to be a G1 rules thing but it was not my intention to do so. What I'm trying to do in here is get everyone to prove their points of view on characters. I read others trashing this and that and haven't seen any solid arguement based on fact. What is character development? To me it's understanding who that character is, I understood every G1 character and every other to follow in other series. Dinobot was one of the greatest to come along, he was honourable and brave, a great, proud warrior, he never changed. The only thing he had over G1 was more screen time to show this personality. Being their was only five Maximals in the beginning, it's no wonder he is looked at as being well developed. Look at other characters who" to me" really had no spotlight or a weak personality: Waspinator, RID Predacons, Armada Red alert, Unicron, Energon Inferno, Omnicons. If someone wants to write a bio on how they view these characters as well rounded, I would like to read it (Not looking to argue, just presenting a point). Every series has also had cliche characters also such as Silverbolt ( The knight in shining armour) Tigatron and Airrazer (Environmentalists) Xbrawn (4x4 redneck) Sideburn (immature lady chaser) Hot Shot (youth who believes he's invinsible) Ironhide (Sams as Hot Shot) And again, I'm not bashing the other shows, I just don't see them as being any better or worse than G1 characters.

Unicron's Personality is focused into Sideway's.

You cant really call staying the same bland personality through out an entire show developing and thats what G1 was. Learning about a character has nothing to do with character Development, its how they change that makes character development.

Im not bashing because I personally loved G1 as a kid and id never say id hate it.
