Can someone explain Ultra Magnus to me?

Recommended Posts

Am I really going to have to argue as to why UM as a white prime is OK?ugh... here's the bottom line.Pat Lee saw something we all saw, even if we refuse to admit it. That being that the Ultra Magnus toy was a white optimus prime with a new trailer that turned into a bigger body for him. All he did was incorporate it into the cosm of his version of G1 (please refer back to that big post I linked to earlier in this thread.) There was no problem with the logic of it within the Dreamwave comics, that's just the way it was. Nothing from other G1 continuities was shattered, because they weren't touched. I'm pretty sure that Pat Lee didn't go to Hasbro and Takara like "I have a great idea to help you guys make some extra dough." because as we all know Pat Lee has all the Marketting savy of a slug. now lets see if IDW does the same thing, because at this point with how the series is, Megatron could take off his helmet and reveal himself to be Alpha Trion and I would call it gold!
I agree 100%One of the things that i really enjoy about the DW series is how it melded some of the fractured continuities of G1. I also love how they gave a lot of nods to the toys. I especially liked Bumblbee, Brawn, and Jetfire's battle masks for example.(ie - the face being the cartoon face and the mask being the toy face)
I liked, and still like, Pat Lee's Transformer artwork. It blew me away when I first saw it. Of course, I grew up with the old Marvel artwork. Anyways, I still like Pat Lee's stuff.
Again - I agree.

:roll to most of this...

FYI, RID was the first 'application' of Ultra Magnus being Optimus' "brother." Dreamwave just took it the next step when they got the license, 'cus face it, the entire Dreamwave run was a massive retcon for G1.

Now, if you want to get into further retcon territory from the original 'toon, it's widely speculated that Dion was rebuilt into Ultra Magnus, which in a sense could make him Op's "brother" because of Alpha Trion's remanufacturing, and is also why he was next in line for the Matrix, as he would have been Alpha Trion's "backup" if you will. Same goes for Elita, she would also have likely been a candidate had she been kept around.

As far as the Marvel run however, Ultra Magnus was basically only around in the UK run, and showed no real association to Optimus.

As far as the toy goes, for the better part of 15 years it was just a diaclone repaint of battle convoy which in turn was just convoy with a different trailer. There were no other Ultra Magnus toys until RID, and as far as the Hasbro 'repaint haters,' Ultra Magnus has only been a white Prime repaint by Hasbro in the US TWICE since G1 (bendy prime & classics prime). The rest was all Takara there chachi's.

Don't forget war within Ultra Magnus

I always considered the 'brother' thing as being from the same assembly line, like internatlly being the same, but with different appearances.

Believe me, I certainly try to.

I always considered the 'brother' thing as being from the same assembly line, like internatlly being the same, but with different appearances.

Same here.

When I looked at the TF toys and saw the repaints, I always retconned that a certain design was produced in certain quantities and that the only difference in appearance was formed by the paintjob or small add-ons for the altmode (like sirens). To call these brothers...is far-fetching, but maybe insofar as TF's can have brothers, these are it.

I always saw the Magnus-Prime situation in the same light. (Just as the Optimus Prime looking Decepticon we saw in Marvel # 1 that Goki posted some time ago.) They were of the same design just colored differently. Magnus just needed or decided to use armor at some time in his existence.

As for official explanations, in generation 1 it was only in the Marvel comics and the cartoon that Magnus wasn't a white robot inside armor. The toy, Dreamwave and IDW have all made clear that inside the armor, there's a white robot of the same design as Optimus Prime, and those are all a legitimate as the cartoon and comics from the 80's.

RiD even made Magnus Prime his brother although they don't share the same design. That, just as with Sideswipe/Sunstreaker I've always found weird.

EDIT: before I forget, in almost every instance that Magnus was a Prime repaint, I thought Magnus looked better than Prime. Actually, I think every Magnus, either repaint or new mold, looks better than the Prime from the same series.

I stand corrected :thumb

So that brings the grand total to: 3

3 by hasbro, but there's MP-02, revoltech magnus, uh the shoe guy magnus... and that's all I can think of.

Ok now here's where I find problems. If Orion Pax, and Magnus are brothers because Magnus looks like Prime then how are they originally brothers? After all before the Matrix Orion had no face plate, and he was slightly smaller than his later form, and Magnus never got a Matrix up grade and started out in his "white Prime" form. Sooo apparently either Magnus was built after Pax became Prime and his basic form was based on Prime's new form or they were both built around the same time and Magnus' run was slightly larger, and the only one that actually made it was him, and they had some sort of problems which is why Magnus' armor was built. If it was built to take care of some structural problem then that would explain why he always preferred to wear it.

Of course there are some ways that can explain robotic reproduction however most might scoff at the logic even though it is similar to the growth, and spread of viruses. Well at least the explanation I can give.
