Seek and ye shall find part 2 (second set)

Recommended Posts

I went over the image limt, so info from first post is copied below:

Hi guys,

I finally got around to doing my custom seekers. Starscream was the first and was posted months ago. All have mods and paint changes from the originals. I consider these guys more of "dark" seekers than the cartoon/anime versions. I'm gonna list each one with notable points...

Starscream: panel lined and missle tips modified.....red paint redone to be darker & duller, head & eyes repainted.

Thundercracker: midnight blue, missle tips modified head & eyes repainted.

Skywarp: repainted magenta parts to a more accurate purple, changed paint apps to fit in with the other 2 seekers, again, missle tips modified

Dirge: custom wings made all from the stock figure, cut off tail pieces to form front wings, cut off rear wing fins, flipped them and epoxied them to reverse sides. He's my favorite of all 6, the blue and yellow turned out exactly as I wanted it to.

Ramjet: removed paint apps to give a more plain/g1 feel. Replaced clear canopy with a yellow one from a donor starscream

Thrust: uses modified original G1 thrust wings attached to a starscream body. The wingspread is a *little* wide, but I feel that it gives his robot mode a more ominous look.

None have insignias purposely, and I do not plan to add them. When I took pictures of the plane modes of the second seeker set (Dirge, Thrust, Ramjet), I omitted the missles since I think their alt modes look better without them. Other notes: I used tamiya acrylics and testors acrylics all brushed on. I don't even know how long it took for all of these guys, but building Dirge and Thrust took the longest and were the most painful!! I'm still touching up paint on bits here and there each time they are transformed. I find that after about 3 or 4 coats, the areas stop chipping/rubbing off and become glazed/fused to the plastic parts in question. Any questions or comments welcome. Thanks for looking!

Remainder of pictures follow from my other post since I went over the image limit

love the way they look what paints did you use.

sorry, paint info was in other post, I didn't know there were pic limits, so with 17 pics I had to split my post into 2 topics. Anyway, they were tamiya and testors acrylic brush ons. First post with full info is here :)

That Thrust > Botcon Thrust. I think I'll make one. If I do so, would you accept a commission to paint him? I hate painting (because I suck at it.)

I'm glad you like Thrust :) Unfortunately, since I have about 0 free time, it has taken me about 2 months to just get these guys done, so I probably couldn't take on such a job. I can tell you the colors I used though.....for Thrust it was a mix of Tamiya "hull red" and "flat red" and flat black for the wings. I was relieved when I saw the botcon dirge and thrust because at first I was afraid that I would like their versions better, as it turns out I like mine better. Main reasons being... they didn't remold Dirge's wings and I feel that they made thrust's turbines/wings too small...also don't like that they made the faces black.

Oh yeah and a trick I've learned with brush painting is that you need to get the consistency "just right"...I try not to brush the paint on...I try to put it on it drops or blobs, and then push it around with the brush and let it coat the pieces rather than continuously brushing it. This is especially important when you want to retain details such as the etching on Dirge's wings. There are times when I paint a part only to have to strip it later because the paint when on too thick and the molded detail was lost.

ramjet needs something in jet mode... he is a little plain

Well, I was going for the "g1" look, so that's the whole reasoning behind it. Only think I can even possibly think of is painting the fins black.

all i can see you can do with ramjet is paint the groin guard thing plate the same grey as the rest and possibly have a go at painting the back of the wings red like the front apart from that there is nothing really you can do and its as near as a perfect homage. we've seen a lot of seekers on this site before but i think these are some of the best i even like the darker thundercracker

Yeah, that's a thought (painting hip/groin thing). I think what I'll prob at least do is paint the engines and tail fins black. For Ramjet what really sealed the deal in my mind for the homage was putting the yellow canopy on him. It was such a simple step, but made such a huge difference. Thanks a lot for the compliments :)

I like the details brought out on Starscream's gray. Wash?
