I wouldn't want to loose some limbs while flying around in space at high velocities

Aren't their robot modes what they really look like? Save for the pieces of vehicle mode that's visible?

Nope, just compair the protoform toys of Starscream and Prime to how they look after they scan alt-modes.

 

The protoforms just looks like armorless versions of the normal versions. They look the same, just smaller and weaker and monochrome.
