how to mold....

Recommended Posts

Anybody tried the new air-drying Crayola stuff? It boasts that it doesn't crumble or flake and it looks to dry pretty smooth in the packaging art. It's availible at Wal-Mart or most craft stores.

I'm inclined to buy a pack, create a mold of a small part (say, half a head) and then apply an indention of another head's facial features un top. Once that dries, I'd have a new mold which I'd use on more of the clay. Let it dry and then superglue/screw it onto the existing half head for stability, apply paint and reattach it to the TF.

I'm nervous about how well it would work but if it does, I wanna work up some stuff like using the Alternator Smokescreen's head as the basis for a new head for the Universe Smokescreen made from the Armada Hot Shot mold. No way I'd deface my Alternator for it but if I can safely create a mold and copy it, applying some features like the screw placement for the Hot Shot mold, I'd do it.

i've used the crayola self drying clay and it is really good.but it ends out to be rubbery. to get rid of that you have to dip some of the clay into water and then mold, it'll give it a more plastic type of finish and it does not crumble at all. this a very good product 8/10

Rubbery, huh?

Well, obviously not good for arms/important bodyparts...

But for a head or especially half a head, sounds like it does the trick...

When I did some mod work I used super Sculpy, its cheap and can get some results mildly and its more for a display purpose. Sad to say it ain't worth slag if the bot comes crashing down a three story wall shelf (top shelf, middle shelf, bottom shelf, FLOOR). RIP Energon Prime.

Let's see. I do sculptures, not necessarily kitbashes...

Sculpey as noted requires an oven, but I've used it with small pieces/toys at a low temp and it's faired very well. It can be engraved with detail before or after baking. Very good stuff and a great medium for detail work. You don't want to make limbs outta it though.. it's not Plastic persay.

Model magic is essentiall foam when it dries... wouldn't recommend it at all

Epoxy- Never used it

In a pinch I often MacGyver it using cottonballs and krazyglue. I tear up the cotton ball and make it roughly the shape I want on the figure, then I liberally drip the krazy glue into the cotton till it's soaked. DO NOT INHALE THE FUMES THAT COME OUT OF THE COTTON WHEN YOU ADD THE KRAZYGLUE (nasty stuff). Dries really hard and then it can be easily cut and sculpted with an x-acto. Works really well to fill in larger holes in a kitbash that is too big for epoxy or to add on to a sculpt.

Not necessarily the best way, but it works in a pinch.
