Macross and Robotech

Recommended Posts

I knew that Roadbuster and Whirl were not Takara made, but I didnt know that they were also Macross!

Is Fort Max from Macross too? Hhe too isnt an official Takara creation.

Oh, ironically, the reason why Robotech/Gundam etc were great was becaus ethey WERE NOT characters in their own right: As they were merely vehicles, the animators could show violent scenes that otherwise wouldnt have been allowed (arms and various body parts being blown/ripped/sawn off etc). Transformers, although great, did a U-Turn and was back to square one as they were real living peeps, the violence/action had to be toned down.

*SIGH*

Valid point, never thought of that. Still prefer TF's though...

Macross was the first anime I ever really got into. Heck, it wasn't until I found out that Takara made the 1/55 VF-1S into a Transformer that I really got back into Transformers (since I was a fan when I was younger).

The mecha designs were fantastic, the story strong, and the characters were compelling. As Hikaru mentioned earlier, the music is good, if you don't mind Japanese pop. The movie, Do You Remember Love?, has some of the best animation I've ever seen, although it is hard to follow if you haven't seen the series. I've enjoyed the sequels, some more than others (FIRE! BOMBER!), and own just about everything on DVD. My favorite series, even with it's almost complete lack of real exposure anywhere outside of Japan.

My biggest problem with Macross, though, is how there's an almost complete lack of affordable, easy to get merchandise. Anything Macross (not counting Robotech) has to be imported from Japan if it's an offical release. The current #1 Valkyrie, Yamato's 1:48 VF-1 series, is $200 Canadian to import. Add to that the minimal amount of secondary merchandise, like figurines, and you get one starved fanbase.

There is a fair amount of Macross stuff in Japan, but its not as well known as Gundam. Id say its even less known that Transformers with young kids, but more respected by older Japanese.

Ive heard that Toynami, or some company in the USA have made the best Valkeries ever, combining the full transformation of Bandias, with the realism and detail of Yamoto's toys. I sthis true? I never saw any transforming USA Rrobotech toys in Japan, only the big PVC ones.

I've been on TFans for a while now and how in the hell did I miss this thread :stone? Macross is THE greatest contribution to Anime ever! See my first banner, sure I was an RT fan like many when it was fashionable but when I discovered it's original roots (as Macross goes which was my fave of the series) I felt cheated and that there was "more than meets the eye" so to speak :tftongue . Difference in names from the Mecha to the Chrarcters piqued my intrest and I got hooked through books, Manga, websites and eventually obtaining the original series on DVD many years later.

Whoever told you that is a complete idiot. Toynami's Robotech Masterpiece Collection Veritechs are actually the worst VF-1 replicas ever made. The toy reeks of shoddy build quality, misaligned parts and a crappy LED that hinders head movement. Worse is that the first release has only 2% diecast content (Toynami promised at least 30%). The only good thing about the MPCs is the book-style packaging.

If you want the absolute best Valkyrie replica, get the Yamato 1/48 VF-1. Just go to Macross World and check out the pics in the Toys section. Once you go 1/48, you won't go anywhere else when it comes to Macross toys.

Jim Ross: "STUNNER! STUNNER! The Yamato VF-1A just gave the Toynami VF-1A the Stone Cold Stunner!"

Jerry Lawler: "No way, J.R.! How can a toy do something like that?!"

And for those of us with smaller wallets, there is the 1/60 series. I'm still waiting for the day someone converts the 1/48 VF-1S into Jetfire...

Down with Row-boat-tech. :puke
