Macross and Robotech

Hailed as the "real transformers" show by ardent fans, this show helped give birth to "Robotech" in the west and, of course, Jetfire.

Did you know, that if you look carefully, the chap who made this pic....

...has a (hopefully permnanent) shop in Akihabara. I only found it once, but I was given the above pic free....as a poster. the original was for sale for a thousand pounds. Perhaps I'll buy it one day!

Let's enjoy discussing macross here!

The talented guy who did that remastered watercolor poster was Haruhiko Mikimoto! He lent his considerable talents to famous anime titles like GunBuster, Macross DYRL, Orguss 2 and many others! If you see him and can speak Japanese fluently ask nicely if you can get a sketch or an autograph! He might be willing, but word of caution do not ask him about Macross 2, he hated working on that OVA series. Good luck and let us know how it goes. :thumb

I bought Jetfire as a kid cause I was into Robotech, which I found out later was Macross. Anyways I knew at the time what Jetfire was so I'd happily transform him while watching Robotech. :)

Now that the Takatoku valks have been re-issued by Bandai. I have no nostalgic feelings about Jetfire. He's a VF-1S with a crappy color scheme. All hail the original! :D

Thanks for the advice1 I never got to meet him, but a very cute Japanese lady gave me the free pic. Ironically, small postcards were being sold and i asked her if she had a poster for resale. she gave it to me and then i asked her for 3 more, for my chums. she gave me more! the posters all had "not for sale-promotion only" on the bottom of them. i feel guilty, coz one is in my toilet/restroom!

My art teacher at my school in Japan is a FAB artist. he doodles Gundams and macross fighters/battlezoids frequently and he gives me them when he's finished! they look like production sketches and he signed them! yatta!

Disnt the guy who you mentioned also do art for some final fantasy games? i saw watches bearing hisartwork at the same place!

Robotech is OK with me.

But I like Transformers better cause its the robot that's the character.

They're not just planes that convert into robots. They're alive.

I have bad memories of my first "macross" toy

*remembers KO sky god" :puke

PLEASE love both toy lines. They are like brothers born in the eighties.

Transformers is like English, a bastrd of many toy robot lines. Macross is more pure.

Both are Great. Macross was more for adults while Transformers for kids.

This otta raise some heckles.

Wahahaha

If you have only seen Robotech, I highly recommend watching the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross that the first section of Robotech is based on. Minmay's songs are SOOOOOO much better in the original language version. Also the film version, called "Macross: Do You Remember Love" follows roughly the same story as the SDF Macross series and has far superior quality of animation.

Mikimito might've done some FF character designs. He did one game called Stephanie. But as any Mikimoto fan will tell you he is best known for Macross DYRL the movie, Macross 2 (which he fought against doing), Gunbuster and his Macross 7 manga.

Oh and of course DYRL looks better it had a higher budget, it was a movie not a tv series.

Robotech is OK with me.

I recently bought Robotech remastered Macross saga parts 3/4, because the 2 DVD set came with a transformable pull-back-and-go mini VF jetplane thing that I want to repaint into a pseudo WST Jetfire. I tried to get into the cartoons, but they didn't really do anything for me. I liked Transformers mainly for the charachters, it was just a bonus that they transformed into cars. Macross was boring to me, in comparison. This is my 24 year old, current opinion, by the way. As a kid, 5 years old in the eighties, I knew nothing about Japanese anything, let alone old toy lines and how they became Transformers. I just thought the toys were cool, and that they were just to go with the shows. I didn't figure out why Ironhide and Ratchet didn't have heads until last year. That's when I finally learned a little bit about the history behind TFs and Diaclone, and Microman, etcetera. I always just thought Jetfire (Skyfire to me, then and now) and Roadbuster were cool transformers. I never knew they were Robotech, until recently. I liked them all.

Oh, where can I find out more about the Robotech series that Roadbuster and Whirl came from, and were there Bandai Robotech toy versions of these and other vehicles like them? All I can find on Ebay are variations on the Jetfire Valkyrie.
