Megatron & Galvatron

Recommended Posts

This maybe a dumb thought, but it is one that has puzzled me for some time. In the G1 toy line there was a distinct difference between ol megs and galvvy, not just a repaint which is more common today. Personally, I think there should be a distinct difference. Any thoughts?? :tfhuh

I think that if they are going to continue the Megatron to Galvatron transformation, then the character and the toy should be new molds with real differences.

However, repaints sell and save money for the companies so I don't think we'll see that anytime soon.

I completely agree there should be a clear distinction. But TFs are sadly constantly being repainted and not always for the better.

i agree

I agree with the others, and I think this will be the popular opinion... But in some instances the "Megatron/Galvatron tranformation" is something that Hasbro has done. For instance the fact that in Superlink the character is already/still Galvatron. You also have the example from R.I.D. where Gigatron transformed into Devil Gigatron, well the toys we got if I remember right was Megatron (Devil Gigatron) and Galvatron (Devil Gigatron repaint).

It's all business and good business is saving me, or so they tell me.

Plus with them reinventing the series over and over again they would rather save the molds for the next series and just repaint the already established bots.

Look at Armada, over, and before it ended there were protos all over ebay for Energon. Now we are in the midst of Energon, and the protos have started to level off. So they may be getting ready for the next series. So take it in stride, Armada Megatron became galvatron, but only in looks, then Energon gave us the Ultimate Galvatron, and named it Megatron. So who knows what the next series will bring.

I'd like to see a new mold, or at least a retooling. But I think Hasbro/Takara are going to stick with repaints.

One thing I'd like to see story wise is Galvatron as a seperate character, not just as an upgrade of Megatron.

actually in japan there was a difference in the megs/galv mold. There was some kind of extra joint that allowed the extra transformations. In the US they just used the Galvitron mold in the begining so you pretty much could just choose your color. If you were in Japan, you had to get both

I agree. I always thought the idea of G1 Galvatron as Decepticon City Commander (as it says on his tech spec) was a cool idea. Oh well.

To me, however, the differences between G1 Megatron and Galvatron were just too jarring. There really wasn't much of anything about Galvatron that was specifically reminiscent of Megatron, outside of the shoulder cannon. This was even more striking in the design for the cartoon version -- at least the toy had more color similarity to Megatron.

The drastic change was just really odd, especially when you consider that Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime were practically identical to each other (okay, they're the same guy and we've all accepted the fact that one is essentially a taller version of the other, but there's no reason why they had to be designed that way).

Of course, Cyclonus and Scourge looked nothing like Skywarp and Thundercracker, but those were new characters with new personalities, whereas Galvatron retained Megatron's "spark," as we would say nowadays, post-Beast Wars.

(Off-topic question: do you guys think Cyclonus and Scourge had totally new personalities (i.e. Unicron "created" them, and Skywarp and Thundercracker died), or did he just "alter" Skywarp's and Thundercracker's personalities to change them into their new forms? Complete speculation, of course, but just curious to know what y'all thought.)

All that to say, I think the Megatron -> Galvatron thing is being done to death. It's to the point where we expect it with every iteration of the show. Zzzz......

I agree. While I enjoy having a Megs and a Galvvy around, it's coming to the point where we just expect a "Megs then Galvvy" transition. I think it be a cool idea to explore a "what if" synopsis. What if Megatron and Galvatron were two different people. What if they couldn't stand each other. What if one was secretly trying to overthrow the other one. It's just a thought.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that in the Japanese series Megs & Galv were separate, which I believe was already mentioned earlier in this discussion. :tfgrin
