The LotR fandom was mostly ecstatic about the films, but there was a huge backlash against Arwen's character initially, based partly on an early draft of the script that had her fighting at Helm's Deep (proving that freaking out over outdated information is not exclusive to the TF fandom). Most other such moments happened after the fact, like Aragorn falling over the cliff in TTT and Frodo sending Sam away in RotK.
