respect, honor, and equal and opposite counterparts

Recommended Posts

there has always been a great deal of unspoken respect and honor between optimus prime and megatron. one showing it quite often in an open manner the other only vaguely hinting at it over the years as wass neccesary.

each know the other every bit as well if not better then  each knows himself as an individual and while each is quite possibly the purest living imbodiment of their fueding societies views beliefs and idealogies, and while each has come to know see and think of the other as being a worthy adversary neither one is anywhere near being like a friend to the other and yet each is  well aware of the fact that so long as they remaion enemies no real progress is ever made by either side from the viewpoint concerning their fueding societiies while at the same time each is all to aware of the fact that they make far greater allies then enemies and are also aware that true progress is made only when they are both willing to work together.

through that rather warped and twisted bond each somehow knows that when they must work together as allies that each can trust their life in the hands of the other if only for a time.

while megatron has made it all to clear that he would like nothing better then to defeat optimus in a fight to the death and to crush the very life out of him with his bare hands.

what is less clear is the somewhat vague fact that he would never willing allow optimus to die at the hands of anyone else other then he himself.

these are just my thoughts on the matter but in that slight way right there he in his own way could be seen in that light as openly showing concern for prime's physical health andwell bieng. should someone actually suceed in  robbing him of that sole pleasure in life, well i can't help but have the feeling that megatron at most might be willing to go so far as to personally avenge the death of his life long adversary but more out of a desire to take out his own personel frustration on the person who had robbed him of that sole pleasure in the end.

Whatever. It's whatever the writers at the time feels like to portray Megatron or Optimus Prime. If Simon Furman wrote Megatron to be the Transformers' hero and Optimus Prime as the villain that he really is, then your analysis goes out the window.

Unbelievably, I agree with Satanstom on this, somewhat. Character development and relation is simply how the writer envisions it. Megatron and Optimus Prime are really blank slates when it comes to personality. One is the Great Hero, the other the Ultimate Villian. Beyond that, there is barely any characterization of the 2. Yes, sometimes they have been shown as mutually respectful of one another. At other times, they have been shown to have no feelings besides utter contempt for one another.

THe only leaders who actually HAVE some consistent characterization are Primal and Megatron2. Granted, they change from BW to BM, but the difference is explained, and depicted as an evolution within the character. While Prime, the great hero and frontman of peace, individuality and all those values, doesn't shrug back from Mind-control devices (See the G1 Episode "The Core"). He also gives in to his instincts "within", in War Within, when he violently attacks Megatron in the Arc finale, while at other times he promotes pacifism. Not quite consistent.

in the cartoons i sometimes had the vibe thaty Megs was jealous of Prime.

well lets look at where G1 came from. The decepticons were out to produce a refined energy source out of generally every means necessary. The autobots stop them.

Lets go down the list:

Solar power, hydroelectric, crystals, Anti-matter/cold fusion.

While the Decepticons used the "power to conquer the universe" idea, the Autobots, being vehicles whose modes are abundantly powered by fossil fuels where taking them in a backwards direction, hence events on Cybertron such as the "Great Shutdown" according to Furman, where they burn out the energon reserves within the planet itself.

On the subject of Optimus/Megatron, Megatron is the leader willing to use any means necessary to stop anyone, anything in his way. He led by example, while Prime as well did, showed his force in command. In the modern mythology with Decepticons as the warrior race, Megs was a hero to his people for being the first one to step out of the arena and into the chain of command.

Way to compleatly ignore Armada.

...and Optimus Prime as the villain that he really is...

Care to elaborate on that?

Yeah, Optimus Prime seeks to destroy the Decepticons - not exactly the way a peaceful leader should find solutions to end conflicts. I mean, the Decepticons want to destroy the Autobots too. I don't see how Optimus Prime's method is different from Megatron, other than that his version of peace is more popular with people in general, that's all - sort of like a certain U.S. President whose name rhymes with Bee Double Ewe Gush.

:pfx

Optimus Prime and Megatron already admitted their mutual respect for each other in G2 - when they formed a temporary allegiance to unite against the Matrix+Warworld powered Starscream. During this campaign, Megatron and Optimus Prime demonstrate that they know each other's moves so perfectly well, than they can coordinate combined attacks and maneouvres flawlessly, forming a deadly two-robot army - on their own, they were pwned by Matrix-Warworld Starscream, but together their might was without peer.

Megatron admits to Optimus Prime that it is a shame that they fight on opposing sides - Optimus Prime concurs and adds that it's not just a shame, but a tragedy.

So the mutual respect between Optimus Prime and Megatron has been firmly established for at least the last 13 years. So... what's the point of this thread?? :/
