The Power Rangers-ization of the Transformers

Power Rangers dumped the much continuity deal by about the "In Space" series, and fully diverged with Lost Galaxy.  So PR has been going for 4 odd years of having no inherit connection with the previous series.

sorry, but it's all the same continuity in Power Rangers. But this conversation is getting off topic, but it you wanna talk more about this, head over to the Power Rangers thread.

Indeed. Although it seems like no one else is that bothered by this all that much. Not that the Transformers was ever anything more than a toy commercial; but at least in G1 they gave you time to get to know the characters. ...er, before they were all killed off in TF:TM. Oh, who knows. At least there's hope of a cool story in the upcoming live-action flick.

I think the "rebooting" is a good idea. It allows the parent companies to reinvent familiar characters, which is great for me being a Prime Completist, and introduce brand new ones. Now with gimmicks being the selling point, maybe they will get better. I mean Powerlinking is a huge improvement over the minicon idea. So what will next series deliver unto us, I just hope that the toys dont become some light up sound driven electronic mess, much like Armada Super Prime was.

As for Power Rangers, they have been going strong for a while now. I even have a boxed original megazord complete with applied stickers, that I just cant seem to bear to part with just yet. But the original Power rangers were around for about the same amount of time as the original transformers. They spanned about three years before there were any significant changes, much like the G1 line did up until the movie.

Well, sure it's great for toys, but why do characters always need to be "reinvented"? Whay about actually building upon something? Or am I just wasting my time by even asking these questions...?

Energon is building on Armada, and the speculated Cyberton is supposed to pick up the slack from Energon. So they are building upon the original idea laid down in Armada, they are just retooling it along the way to keep it fresh and make it better. I mean look how much Energon is an Improvement over Armada, and I am sure that Cyberton will be that much better then Energon. So they are building, just with somewhat massive changes in the process.

uhm just to inform, Hasbro made RID a seperate continuity. In Japan CarRobots was supposed to be part of G1 and beastwars, it was explained through time travel.

Im likeing the rebooting too and I like Energon Prime, he doesnt remind me of PR's at all. He reminds me more of Brave and GaoGaiGar which Im sure alot of its designs have roots in since both of those toylines were takara toylines.

Yeah I agree with you, it is more reminisent of the Gaogaigar and brave series, I posted a pick of the gaogaigar thunderbaron over in the toy section, because of the great amount of similarities between thunderbaron and E prime. Go over and take a look at it, I think its called Where they got the idea. Anyway check it out.

Hey, I don't care how it was done back in the day. I don't care about Power Rangers this (they suck astronomically!), or mega-giga-gonna-pull-my-trigga that, I want them to do something good for a change. Look at Dreamwave's comics.....Pure genious! And the artwork......Beautiful! Storyline.....etc... I could go on, but you get the point. These new cartoons are just terrible, we had much better cartoons as kids. Why don't they pick some fans from the G1-era and get their input, instead of asking some deaf dumb and blind homeless whino for a good storyline?

Lord Madhammer, you are not alone.

...a.k.a., a Hasbro marketing executive.

I think there's a couple of reasons why the current TF shows are what they are:

1) they're Japanese (I watch cartoons on Saturday mornings with my son, and I'm amazed at the quantum leap in quality you find in the American-produced shows. Sorry, but it's true)

2) Creativity and originality aren't as cheap as quick & easy storylines.

Sure, the G1 show had goofy moments, but there were also times when you sensed that the writers were really trying to expand the universe and do something different ("Forever Is A Long Time Coming" for instance -- I dunno why, but to me there's something really powerful about the Autobot symbol originating as the Quintesson slave brand for its "consumer goods").

I get the feeling now that Hasbro has recognized that their formula WORKS financially, and they ain't gonna change it. While it's nice to see G1 homages, think about what that's saying. Which figures are the ones we're the most excited about? Armada Unicron. Energon Megatron. Rodimus. Arcee. Scorponok. Starscream. And so on. This, my friends, is not a Transformers renaissance (unless you're working for Hasbro). This is what STAGNATION looks like. Repackaging the old and selling it as something new. I remember the excitement of seeing the Stunticons for the first time, or Cyclonus and Scourge. I was blown away. I don't see that in the Transformers anymore. Now we're most excited about the figures that most resemble ones that came out twenty years ago. OUCH. Even the upcoming live-action movie is most likely going to be a variation of "More Than Meets The Eye."

As for me, I'm sticking with the Energon comics. At least Simon Furman knows what to do with the big bots.

These new cartoons are just terrible, we had much better cartoons as kids.

No you didn't, nostalgia is just clouding your eyes. Kids today will be saying the same thing in 15 years.
