Hi guys,

 

I've been racking my brains trying to resolve US/UK G1 comic continuity for a continuation I've been working on. Here's the sketchy way I've come up with for integrating the Earthforce/time wars stories etc, but there are a few issues I've had trouble with. If anyone has any suggestions for these or thinks of any other issues I'd be grateful for any input. Cheers.

 

Perchance to dream

 

Occurs between ‘totalled’ and ‘time wars’, when Galvatron takes the opportunity to recruit warriors. (damaged durng ‘totalled’?) Although he’s foiled he escapes soon after. Ark is abandoned following heavy damage inflicted during totalled and other auto bots use shuttles to relocate to earth. (Omega left behind to guard) Following Optimus’ return from Nebulos, Steelhaven is dismantled to repair the Ark and Majority of Autobots return to repair it.

 

Time wars

 

Scorponoks troops - involved

Ratbats troops - laying low (due to underbase saga - setting up club con)

Prime’s troops - only handful involved because others helping repair ark, hence shuttle)

 

Shockwave - returned to castle after fall to earth.

Bumblebee - requires repairs due to extensive damage and is remodelled as Bumblebee.

 

 

Earth force (between time wars and underbase saga)

 

Earth force –

Grimlock commands troops (Dinobots, classic heroes)

Survivors - Stories take place during this time. (Continuity problem with Spike skiing trip) Inferno dies during Bludgeons escape. Carnivac, Springer and Broadside leave Earthforce to assist Magnus on Cybertron.

 

Mayhem’s –

Bludgeon, Octopunch, Stranglehold taken prisoner but escape. Snarler dead but Needlenose and Spinster manage to escape to Cybertron - Thunderwing’s command.

 

Prime’s troops –

Off world in Ark, responding to threat posed by outsiders. Outsiders are secretly cultist mechanoids similar to that seen in Unicron saga. Prime meets Nightbeat for first time who’s been tracking cult with Siren on behalf of Xaaron. (who is subconsciously aware through link with Primus that the name Unicron bodes badly for them) They hear the name Unicron (which Prime quotes to Grimlock in Autobase inspecton – the Unicron threat) which they presume is the name of the faction of cultists.

 

Megatron’s troops –

following time wars Megatron ousts ratbat who escapes to Cybertron via space  bridge with a handful of loyal troops to take over from incompetent Triumverate.

 

Shockwave’s troops –

Shockwave again challenges Megatron for leadership indirectly, and rallies some troops covertly via starscream to join his cause.

 

Prior to Underbase –

Megatron is joined by ravage and together they and shockwave leave for Cybertron to take command there. Megatron ditches shockwave in orbit and he falls to earth, hence later animosity. Ratbat returns to Earth after hearing of Megatrons deposition and reinstates himself as commander and reappoints sound wave and starscream (who other troops have no faith in) as officers. Bumblebee somehow reverts back to goldbug again. (but not for long – mwah ha ha)

 

 

Epilogue: Megatron later takes command on Cybertron but leaves after 2 megatron’s incident to work on revenge plan involving starscream. Thunderwing subsequently takes command. 

 

Issues:

 

1 - skiing trip continuity. (as this now has to be at a time after the underbase saga – prior to spikes departure) which would conflict with snarler (+catilla) still being alive (killed during earthforce) and carnivacs defection. Can’t be resolved really, unless Spike left after time wars then returns only to leave again. Pr

oblem is Buster is seen during Ski trip and so would have to be set after Underbase saga.

Where is Buster during Ratbats exile???

 

2 - prowl flashback continuity. (as now happens before Underbase saga which it flashes back to unless this story isn’t included as one of the earthforce stories and can be slotted in elsewhere? – does such a slot exist?)

 

3 – Bumblebee/Goldbug – need to switch several times in order to fit with continuity resolution – not impossible but a bit lame.

I don't think you can resolve the continuities. In G1 alone there are at least continuites that I know of, G1 America, G1 comic, G1 Japan. Each one seperates from the other eventually and goes its own direction. So yeah, good luck resolving it.

Quite frankly, it's Powerglideing impossible.

 

There are multiple G1 comic continuities(at least four, if you count Marvel UK), convention comics that are direct sequals to the cartoons, a few short novels by Simon Furman that continue G2, the japanese continuity mess, etc.

 

It's just impossible. I would advise that you don't try. Any attempt to do so would result in lameifying your fanfic. I suggest you pick one, maybe mix in some elements from the others that you like(Via retcon or something) and just stick with that.

 

Just my advice.

Actually, the G1 UK Marvel comics are meant to be in-canon with the US Marvel comics. They've always been written as an expansion of the US stories. Likewise when Furman assumed the writing helm at Marvel US, Marvel US continuity was retconned to better fit in with Marvel UK. But overall, there is only one catholic Marvel continuity. Just because there are a few continuity discrepancies here and there doesn't mean that they are separate continuities. Lemme put it this way, the continuity discrepancies in the Marvel comics are NOTHING compared to the raging continuity contradictions in the G1 cartoon!! (yet it's generally accepted that the G1 cartoon is a single continuity).

 

Bluestreak1701: your timeline seems fairly spot on - I don't have the time right now to read it in detail (I'm at a net café atm, so time = $$) but it seems alright. I'm sure X-BoB will spot out any serious inconsistencies. The Earthforce arc is a difficult one to place, but I've always assumed that it occurs just before the Underbase Saga.

If you believe the Marvel Comic continuity then Grimlock was the leader of the Autobots while prime was well on disk.

G1 continuity doesn't make any sense. The End. You'll end up blowing your brains out over this issue.

I usually just think about Transformers being toys and just consider the cartoon to be a twenty something minute commercial designed to show off said toys.

The only TF show that had genuine continuity was BW. There was that weird glitch on Coming of the fuzors 2 when. They show Tarantulas and Waspinator already on the battle field and when they come back from commercial they show them just arriving. That has always bugged me.
