Spike is not an as bad father as it seems, he had some consideration for his son:

In the comics, Spike went to university. Never revealed what his major was, but he and a uni buddy were once attacked by Decepticons whilst he was on a holiday... thankfully Spike was able to mentally summon Fortress Maximus to come save them.

 

Also, "Sparkplug" was just a nickname, his real name was William and his middle initial was "E" (Edward?). We know that he was also a Korean War veteran who used his wartime experience against the Decepticons when he sabotaged their fuel.

That comic reminds me that after so many years of feeling Spike and his dad spoiled G1, they were nowhere near as irritating as Rad or Kicker  :tflaugh
