Alt/BT why so popular?

Recommended Posts

ok why are Binatech and Alternators so popular, I dont realy care for them and heres why:

A colors arnt always character accurate

B theres a size difference between other like figures

C in my opinion the feet are usualy ugly

D Molds are reused to often

E Prime as a pickup truck? maybe Orion Pax but  Optimus?

What would you have Optimus Prime be and still fit into the 1:24 scale of the line?  If you don't like Prime, then don't buy him.

Alts/BTs aren't meant to interact with other Transformer toys.  What do you want from them?  Is some one preventing you from playing with them and your Cybertron toys at the same time?

Molds are reused twice for each mold that is made.  That's hardly excessive.  You can't be expecting Hasbro or Takara to make one toy from the mold and then destroy that mold.

The feet are either integrated into the body of the alt-mode or are hidding inside the alt-mode.  There's nothing wrong with the feet.

The colors are generally accurate with the characters, with consideration for the modern vehicle that they are using.

Grimlock is silver,

Jazz is white

Wheeljack is white w/ stripes.

Smokescreen is still a kind of racecar and has the color blue.

Silverstreak is still silver.

Swindle is yellow.

Sunstreaker is yellow w/ black stripes

Sideswipe is red.

Windcharger is red.

Tracks is blue.

Ricochet is black with flames.

Skids is blue.

So, what's the problem with the colors?

Optimus could of been just a car. :redface It only has to be a car that is trully defiant against the cars in the line on strength and muscle look.

The only mold I'd consider excessively used is the Subaru mold.

For the most part people like these toys because:

1. Realism. In vehicle mode a lot of them look like a model car. The vehicle modes are realistic and highly detailed.

2. Based on Generation 1 characters (for the most part). A lot of the fans out there did grow up with G1 therefore have a special bond to it. Seeing the characters they grew up with updated or redone with modern toy technology is probably a dream come true to them. I didn't grow up with G1 but I collect them because they're wicked. But if you can't deal with Grimlock, Ravage, Shockwave, Blaster and Prime being cars then tough luck. Your loss not mine.

3. Articulation. Some of the most articulated Transformers ever are in this line.

4. Intricate transformations. When you buy one don't expect to transform it in 30 seconds. This could be good or bad to you but the complexity truly shows how much work goes into designing these things.

5. Choice. If you like to play with your toys a lot then get an Alternator. The all plastic cheaper alternative for those who can't afford to dish out for the BTs. They still look and play great though. And for the guys who can dish it out there's BT. Diecast parts, excellent paint finishes, heft, packaging, and more. If you're willing to spend more then you'll get more for your dollar.

6. Collector oriented. Having Alternators 1-15, 19 and 20, BT 07, 08, 15, and 16 and BTAs 1-3 I must say they look stunning.

Now some of us may agree that some of the decisions HasTak has made for this line are downright stupid such as Swerve, Ricochet, Rollbar, or BTAs entire concept. Or maybe you might not like Optimus Prime's design. Well no ones forcing you to buy them all. But IMO this is one of the best lines we'll ever get and I look forward to the future of it.

MasterOfPuppets is right. Alt/BTs are the ultimate robots in disguise. In vehicle mode, they betray very little about the fact that they are Transformers. At first glance, you could swear that they are just normal scale model replicas. The Alt/BT concept evolved from Car Robot/RiD - which merged Beast Wars toy tech with vehicular modes, which would work amazingly well in disguising robot kibble. They also give us classic G1 characters upgraded with contemporary vehicles.

I think the idea of BTA was nice (i.e.: providing drivers based on pre-existing TF humans), but it could've been executed a lot better. I think Broadblast is a better example of that BTA should have been - Red alert and Sunstreaker suffer from being repaints of overused moulds (especially Red alert).

For me, they are a dream come true. Way back in 1985 I wished that Transformers were real vehicles, with fully realized detailed interiors but still manage to transform into fully posable Robots. Not to mention bots that closely resemble the Toon images.

Right before Alts/BT came out I started collectiong Reissues and vintage bots. Some where after Tracks and Smokescreen I was reminded of what drove me crazy about G1. I'm sitting there thinking "wouldn't it be cool if their legs seperated and and the bot was posable?" So it was great fun finally getting the Alt versions of these bots.

Pretty much all of your arguments for why you dont like alt/bts can be said for armada, energon, cybertron, etc.  Examples just in Cybertron alone:

1. Cybertron Master Megatron muticolored while Galvatron is gray?

2. CD Hotshot smaller than CD Scattershot?

3. Primus' feet aren't all that aesthetically appealing

4. More than half (closer to 3/4) of all Cybertron molds have repaints.

5. Megatron as a car?

I actually like Cybertron (even all of the above mentioned Cybertron figures) because the above complaints are minor.  Just like it's minor complaints when it comes to alt/bts.  Basically though if you want to know why Alt/Bts are so popular, then you need only look at the alt modes.  Realism.  You can't get more realistic than real world cars.  After all, that's the main "gimmick" of Alts/Bts isn't it?  And bot modes are more or less aesthetically appealing to boot.

The BT/Alt line, at least at the beginning, had a sense of class to it. They were toys you could display at your home or workplace, and only cop about 1/3rd as much flack as normal. Sure, they've boned the line with some less than well thought out repaints and some dodgy (depending on your point of view) human figures, but if you don't like those, don't buy them.

I mean, out of all the figures, I've only got myself the BT versions of Smokescreen (GT), Lambor, Hound, Tracks (yellow), Grimlock, Meister (white), Overdrive, Prowl and Skids. I've skipped about half of them. And out of my entire collection (100+ figures of either Optimus, Megatron, or whoever was filling in for them), the things I get the most comments on are my BT's. People will walk right past a G1 Megatron, which wasn't even ever available here, and go straight to the BT's.

Megatron was available in some states here for a very limited period of time. I think it was unreleased in NSW, but was available in VIC for a few weeks... most kids I knew who had Megatron during the 80s had either purchased it from overseas or interstate like Melb. Here is a listing of Transformers that were or weren't released in Australia.
