Bay and Orci Speak

Its been said before though - and perhaps it is just marketing. but seriously we (american kids) were presented with an idea every bit as original as Star Wars or the Matrix (and both of those films were highly diriviative)

By the way - i agree with what Trench is saying. Completely.

Oh come on now... you call Star Wars and the Matrix derivative (no more or less so than LotR was BTW) but you call Transformers original? What was the original part? I must have missed that.

I thought HR was saying that Transformers was as derivative as Star Wars and The Matrix, yet was presented in a way that made it seem original, just like the other two.

I guess...... but it's not like I hadn't already seen plenty of giant robot cartoons before. For me, Transformers was just a way to fill the post-SW void.

I think that was what he was getting at, it wasn't completely original, but presented in a way that made is seem original.  Just like most people hadn't seen things like Akira or Ghost in the Shell and thought the Matrix came out of left field.

Also rememer madhammer you say repeatedly and proudly - how you came late.

I remember giant (human driven) robot cartoons too. most notably TranzorZ and Voltron.

Transformers was NOT that in 1984.  i dont know exactly what it was in 86 when you joined up.  Of course 3 years after it debuted it wouldnt be as "fresh" as it was to us the first time around.

just saying is all....

Well that's what an assumption is... "an assumption". If I were you, I would listen to what the actual director of the movie is actually trying to tell you, and forget about your assumptions. You may avoid a lot of disappointment that way.

i see no reason to make a TF movie that isn't a g1 TF movie.. that'd be like making a spiderman movie about Ben Reily (spiderman's clone for all you non SM fans :tflaugh), or like Making a He-man movie with Dolph Lungeren (:redface).

Whether or not you see a reason for it is irrelevant... it's pretty clear that they're going to do new things with the brand rather than revisit the past. They've been dropping not-so-subtle hints like this since day 1, but it's like the fans are just in denial about it and only hear what they want to hear. As if Michael Bay doesn't speak for the production?? He's the flippin' director.

I have to aagree withg Madhammer.

I believe the original comments were that it was G1 based or something equally vague and non commital.

By that same definition, Rid/A/E/C are all G1 based too.

From all that was mentioned, it will still be G1 enough to not be comparable to a Spiderman movie about Ben Reilly, but it won't be G1 in the strict definitions so many seem to believe it will.

I started watching G1 in 1985 at the beginning of Season 2. I'll tell you right now the reason why it "stuck" for me when none of the other giant robot shows had:

1) the availability and variety of toys

2) it wasn't Japanese

seriously, that's it. Beyond that I can't think of a single thing that Transformers pioneered.

but my original post acknowledged that it was in large part marketing -

Branding.

Maybe marketing isnt the way i would word it. but ....

i dont get it - what are you arguing with me about??

you said (I thought) that G1 was more of a pioneering show than BW. I took exception with that.

I still love you though.

well whatever sw turns out to be he probrably needs  something that would transform into laserbeak and it will have to have their original colors since this is a g1  based movie.

:tflaugh You're gonna be one sad little boy on Christmas morning.

Believe me I respect the fans. But I just want you to give me a chance because I'm working with some really talented artists to create this vision. But it is a vision that allows for growth, change, improvement and surprises. Looking back at the history of Transformers, remember there has been tons of change and improvements over the years.

Hopefully this "vision" is better than "The Island"...if I remember correctly it didnt fare to well.  Correct me if Im wrong.
