Transformers Classic Line (neo G1?)

Lazerblast man, you keep taking everything he says far too literally.

Take this quote:

And by "anime-inspired" I meant the current trend to make things look like they just came out of Poke-dragon-Z with sweat beads running down their faces.

Dragonball Z and PokeMon are both well known mainstream anime shows in the west, and when many non anime fans hear the word anime, it is those kind of shows they think of.

Similarly, the teardrop is heavily associated with Japanese animation.

Saying "Poke-dragon-Z with sweat beads running down their faces" automatically conjures up certain imagery for many and is far shorter than going into along winded explanation of the current generalised perception of contemporary anime in the west.

It is not meant to be read any more literal than someone describing someone using martial arts in a fight by saying, "he went all Bruce Lee on their asses".

We know he didn't turn into Bruce Lee, but we associate Bruce Lee with fast and powerful martial arts displays and understand the general jist of what he did without needing a literal play by play description which kills everyone's interest.

So to take what he said and write it out literally, there are certain sterotype images associated with anime.

They are not present in all anime, it's not the most accurate image, but they are associations made by general people with little knowledge of the subject.

These include things such as large eyes, spiky hair, everything being bright and vivid and angular.

For example characters from Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon and Beyblade all have that similar look.

And it sells stuff to a lot of kids.

When a toy goes EXTREEM it plugs into popular imagery, gets a radical makeover into an amalgamation of everything kids like in as exaggerated a way as possible.

If you've ever seen the Simpsons episode where they create Poochi, who uses the EXTREEM phrase, you get a feeling it's a similar process.

At one point muscular men and overly large weaponry was popular with kids.

Everything from Star Wars to Batman brought out grotesquely out of proportion figures with back packs that had guns attatched that were twice the size of the figure.

That is EXTREEM in action.

...okay, sure.

For example characters from Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon and Beyblade all have that similar look.

No they don't. Not at ALL :wtf

*Sigh*

All of the main characters have that look.

I didn't say they look the same, I said they do all have those characteristics, that similar mainstream known look which many people associate with anime.

Wow, someone's doing a "great" job of alienating themselves from the rest of the group. :roll

Anyway, I hope this line will be something worth a damn and not just a carry-over line with little style.

They don't all have large eyes, most of the chars' hairstyles aren't "spikey", they're just not combed... and I have no idea where the "bright and vivid and angular." part came from.

Well fuq you.

Anime Sweat Bead

I kind of have to agree with what Laserblast is arguing.

Though everything mentioned is clearly anime it's definitely not all the same. What we've seen pass for human designs in the last three series is imo a lot closer to G1 then a lot of was passes for traditional anime. Meh, I'll just say compared to the extreme facial expressions and strange character renderings, (where characters are drawn overly cartoony/deformed for humrous scenes) the Armadaverse cartoons are much closer to traditional 80s feeling animation. Superlink had a couple of such shots involving Snowcat, and Demolisher but nothing to the extent of Teen Titans (I know it's not traditional anime but I never bothered to watch a lot Pokemon or Yugioh) Galaxy Force I think had one tear drop, at the same time Lori almost busted a blood vessel in her forhead, and that was only nearing the end of the series.

As for Japanese anime being superiour that's all a matter of opinion. With films like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Metropolis, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky and many others the Japanese are definitely ahead of the trend in terms of realism, and style.Though American cinema is slowly breaking out of the Disney mold of animation with films like Titan AE, and The Iron Giant it still has a long way to go. (seriously the only two I could think of that wern't Disney/Dreamworks) :redface Personally I think the only reason people are quick to dismiss Japanese animation as a whole is because crap like Pokemon/Yugioh/Beyblade/Teen Titans(to some) make it look bad. I'd throw DBZ in there as well but that would just piss off another whole fanbase.

There's nothing wrong with those shows at all, with the exception of TT, which is trying to copy the "coolness" of anime, but with all the WRONG anime elements added instead.

Oh really?

Not really :tflaugh

Interesting how a lot of Japanese characters follow the same trend.  :tflaugh
